SaskTel is putting up a fuss over the fact that both the CRTC and now the CCTA are on the same page. Both organizations have stated that few or no regs for new era VoIP service providers and more regs for established telecommunications companies is the right way to go.
In the near term, I think this will be good for the consumer. The established Telco's have been in the biz forever and dominate telephony today. Less regs for a smaller voip-centric provider will encourage more competition in the marketplace and potentially spur innovation. Longer term it may have the opposite effect as the ILECS of old lose ground. We need to remember that end-to-end IP is not here yet and we need to rely on POTS for while yet. I can see service interruptions, strikes, and more as the incumbents look to become more competitive.
Sasktel=Monopoly
they hold back the future the greedy jerks
I 've got a question for you.
Why does every government butt kissing alien company come into this province ( or any other for that matter) and cry to the government that the existing telcos have a monopoly and therefore is unfair , blah, blah , blah and that the telcos, therefore, MUST charge more for their services AND supply the " competition" with some of their existing equipment to make the new guys system work?
They essentially have nothing more than an office with a few employees to send out bills to customers taken from the telco by prices that are legislated lower to "make an even playing filed"
What this means is this. If I see my neighbor with a successful business suppling foofoo valves to Joe Public, I can cry foul and have my neighbor set me up an office inside of his building and I will bill MY customers ( off of his marketing list!!), 10% or so less than he does while using all of his equipment! My neighbor still needs the same amount of money to operat on so he gets his profit.... from where?
Sooner or later, this intelligent strategy is going to come back and bite somebody hard. I'll lay dollars to doughnuts it's going to be Joe Public who thinks he is getting one heck of a fine deal right now.
And you know what? We will DESERVE the result we are going to pay for.
