As the fast-paced communications technology market continues to evolve with new products and announcements, network providers often face challenges in how to better address their audience's needs. As end users' demands increase for more applications for their connected devices, network operates need to shift their strategy to fulfill those needs and learn how to capitalize on effort.
And one way network operators are doing that is by adopting new business models and embracing the concept of open development. According to an Alcatel-Lucent whitepaper, "Driving the Application Explosion," more and more network operators are taking advantages of new business models because they offer new strategies to boost application enablement and address the insatiable demand for applications across consumers and enterprises.
Open development, for example, offers network providers a chance to help customers access content from multiple devices across any network.
"By efficiently enabling applications and collaborating with third parties in a more open manner, network providers can establish their place as value-added participants in the emerging application ecosystem," the white paper said.

- offer greater efficiencies to meet the demand for long tail applications

- offer improved scale and speed in application delivery
- establish new revenue opportunities from greater application adoption.
While there is no "one-size fits all" solution, network providers need to broaden their horizons and consider multiple business models to boost their business and application offering. The models often vary across customer segments, device and networks. But in the end, the strategy will pay off.
