Alcatel-Lucent Showcasing New lightRadio Product Family at UITP World Congress

By Rajani Baburajan

Alcatel-Lucent is showcasing its new lightRadio product family for urban transport applications at the 59th UITP World Congress and Exhibition in Dubai.

One of the solutions the company is demonstrating is lightRadio Cube, which supports train or vehicle to ground communications. Alcatel-Lucent is also demonstrating on-board interactive kiosks providing multimodal and multimedia information, integrated communication and management solutions for control rooms, on Board CCTV and Video analytics solutions and more.

Announced earlier this year, the lightRadio product family helps mobile operators by radically shrinking and simplifying the base stations and cell site towers, which are the most expensive, power hungry, and difficult to maintain elements in the network.

Featuring a flexible architecture, lightRadio provides simpler, lighter and greener broadband wireless networks for urban transport operators. They can improve performance and operational security as well as passenger experience. The solution distributes intelligence throughout the network, so it can dynamically expand to meet growing demands.

lightRadio creates a new architecture where the base station, typically located at the base of each cell tower, is broken into its component elements and distributed through the network or ‘carrier cloud.’  It also combines various cell tower antennas to form a single, powerful multi frequency, multi standard (2G, 3G, LTE) device that can be mounted on poles, sides of rail and bus stations or anywhere else there is power and a broadband connection.

The lightRadio family of products incorporates Bell Labs’ innovations in active antenna technology and advanced CPRI compression, as well as partnerships with Freescale and HP, company officials said.

Alcatel-Lucent is offering a wide range of services including strategic planning, consulting, end-to-end network design and optimization, OSS/BSS integration and managed services to ensure the successful deployment of lightRadio.

At this year’s UITP World Congress and Exhibition in Dubai, UITP (International Association of Public Transport) has decided to award excellence under the slogan “PTx2” (public transport times two). Alcatel-Lucent has been recognized for this award through its lightRadio Portfolio.
