In an article by Gary Kim, Matt Bramson, Inphonex chief marketing officer, sais some interesting things about telecom sales to SMB.

The Future of Bell DSL

January 27, 2011

AT&T announced that they "nearly" hit 3 million U-Verse TV customers. In comparison, Bell added 2.8M new wireless customers in the 4th quarter and sold 4.1 million iPhones. Bell has 95M wireless subscribers. [see PDF].

Net-heads Grab the Gold Ring

January 3, 2011

Over on Voyces Larry Lisser blogs about 4 communications startups that received funding in 4Q2010.  (Pertinent because Communications Startup Camp is in less than a month on Feb. 3 at ITEXPO!) What made the story stand out for me is that all the innovation in communications is coming from Net-Heads not Bell-Heads. Software developers are shipping great Art.

Verizon coming up with another stupid slogan or the ability for a largely technophobic consumer to watch the same movie on 3 devices is not a great advance.  I'll give them some credit for the social networks widgets, but again not easy for the general public to pull off.

Meanwhile Net-heads are making mashups; designing friendly UI; and allowing the small business to take full advantage of the web/apps/cloud.

For example, Tampa local's Charles Armstrong launched the iPhone app Tour Wrist in 2010 at TEDX Tampa Bay

J2 Buys Competition (and other M&A)

December 8, 2010

So Salesforce bought a Ruby based cloud platform company called Heroku for $212M, which my RubyonRails geeks say is a steal. Why? Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO, salesforce.com, says: "Ruby is the language of Cloud 2, and Heroku is the leading Ruby application platform-as-a-service for Cloud 2 that is fueling this growing community.

8 Questions for Cloud Providers

November 22, 2010

I've done a couple of webinars lately for VAR's and Agents about the Cloud. I think that between SAAS and Cloud, vendors are forgetting that they are selling applications.

I think the disconnect right now is that Agents aren't comfortable selling apps. They aren't comfortable with many of the SAAS Providers.

Not a Cloud in the Sky - Clear Sailing for M&A

November 4, 2010

The headline is goofy. I know. But another acquisition happened. Windstream grabbed some hosting.

We saw Cbeyond's purchase of both Aretta Communications and MaximumASP for what appears to be 3.5x anual revenue today.

Basically The Cloud is

November 2, 2010

Basically, the Cloud is here. But then it has been for a while. The Cloud has been around a while. We used to use it to describe the Internet. Then we used it to describe the Frame Relay system when explaining how PVC's worked.

The Cloud is For Agents, too

October 28, 2010

Khali Henderson of Phone+ and I are doing a webinar tomorrow for agents at TCA on The Cloud. One of the TCA Board Members, Emmet Tydings, President of AB&T Telecom, sent me this response:

"Voice is just another application in an IP world. Mobility is mandating a large portion of strategic service delivery changes within organizations.
