Does Broadsoft Have a Problem?

February 3, 2014

M5 Networks before being purchased by ShoreTel migrated from a Broadsoft platform (M6) to its own software. Sure, they had to hire 100 developers to replace the Broadsoft but still.

The biggest noise out of the Cloud Comm Alliance is that the licensing fees for the platform are like paying vigorish to a loanshark. RingCentral execs used that vig as a reason that some CCA members should migrate to the RC platform instead.

ITEXPO Update

January 30, 2014

In Miami Beach, at ITEXPO, Dr. Satwant Kaur's keynote this morning centered on how technology, especially nanotech, is transforming healthcare. Robotics, sperm and magnets combine to improve conception. I wonder what that procedure is like (and how much it costs).

Nextiva hired Ira Feuerstein to run its channel.

Lots Going On

December 19, 2013

Apparently, all will be better when we switch from QAM to WAM

DISH hasn't given up on wireless. It has done terrestrial LTE trials with nTelos. DISH is still looking to buy LightSquared or T-Mobile.

Is Oracle Coming for Broadsoft?

November 21, 2013

Today, Broadsoft's market cap is about $733M; it would cost Oracle approximately $890M to buy BSFT to complete the Telecom acquisition package of Tekelec, Acme Packet, Oracle's marketing automation (Eloqua) and customer service (RightNow) offering.

Tekelec evolved from a class 4 switch to some kind of mobile policy machine with connections to IMS and LTE. One of the problems facing Hosted PBX providers presently is that mobility is like a patch or add-on. There are limitations for the mobility play due to a bunch of factors, like too many devices in the marketplace, multiple platforms (iOS, Android, Win8, Blackberry), and a separate carrier provides the cell service.

What Do the Numbers Look Like

November 11, 2013

Third quarter revenue numbers have been streaming out via press releases. Here's a look at some of them.

Windstream's 3Q2013 numbers are declining. "Overall consumer service revenues were $324 million, a decrease of 3 percent from the same period a year ago" - of which, "Consumer broadband service revenues were $119 million, a 4 percent increase year-over-year."

UC Growth is Stagnant

November 6, 2013

The case for UC: "The communications requirements of most businesses now extend well beyond telephony. They embrace email, instant messaging, voicemail, video conferencing and 'presence'. Ideally every one is integrated with the others to create a suite of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) tools." Ideally - but not in reality. Hence, the big problem - and why UC growth isn't what it should be.

Broadsoft is Now a SP

October 17, 2013

Broadsoft Connections 2013 kicked off with the CEO keynote. The twitter stream for #BSFTconnections has been interesting. UC-One is the answer to BYOD and mobile. Telstra has been a customer for 10 years - with 250K seats.

Broadsoft Alum Acquired by Fidelity

October 17, 2013

Now that it is out there I can report that cloud-based video conferencing service, Vidtel, was acquired by Fidelity. Wainhouse, a research house for the telepresence industry, let the news out yesterday.

Vidtel, based in Sunnyvale, CA., was founded by former Broadsoft CMO, Scott Wharton, in 2008. Alex Doyle, another Broadsoft alum, was Vidtel's VP of Marketing.

I Wonder Sometimes

September 11, 2013

Maybe my head is in the clouds here at Cloud Partner Conference, but I have been scratching my head about a few things this morning.

I wonder why AT&T Wholesale has a meeting room at an Agent show. I understand that ACC Business, an AT&T division, is moving to a buy rate model. I have heard something similar will be coming from TWC in Texas.
