Another Hosted PBX Merger

July 9, 2011

Tampa-based Telovations acquires North Carolina based FeatureTel, combining two Broadsoft providers. No financial details were released. Could this be a sign about the viability of the US Hosted PBX space?

Many of the Cloud Comm companies haven't grown as fast as their backers would like.

Moving and Shaking the Industry

June 20, 2011

Cbeyond opens up for business in Boston. Agents rejoice as they get to sell a booming brand to the SMB space in Boston.

AboveNet looks to have a private equity buyer.

Another fiber provider is getting an infusion of equity from a new private equity partner.

One of the original Broadsoft providers, CommX, was acquired by Keyon Holdings.

Lightyear Network Solutions has a new Sprint MVNO agreement that will allow it to offer its 60k current customers some new wireless products as well as its agent channel.

8×8 acquires a cloud company named Zerigo, which offers managed DNS, VPS and Cloud servers and monitoring. This move puts 8×8 on par with Cbeyond, Intermedia.Net and Parallels -- all companies that are truly treating Hosted VoIP as just another service in the cloud.

Jobs

June 14, 2011

I was lured in to watch some of the GOP Presidential candidates debate on CNN last night. (I'll keep any comments about how the Baker Act comes to mind while watching some of them.) Then I switched over to watch the Bruins just pound Vancouver again. (Sorry, Wig!) But the prevailing debate theme was JOBS.

I just noted that bankers are making pucks on M&S and debt, but there are jobs out there. Two were in my inbox today.

One CLEC needs a VoIP Account Exec.

One MSO needs some with Broadsoft experience.

A couple of months ago, a few CLEC's were hunting for Channel Managers.

If you are job hunting, is your LinkedIn profile up-to-date and complete?
Are you connected to me on LinkedIn?
Do you check the jobs section of LinkedIn?
Do you check the TMC Job Board?

On twitter, I get a lot of marketing jobs.

The State of VoIP

May 24, 2011

Seems passe to be writing about VoIP, but that's the overarching theme of this post. What is happening in the VoIP world?

Microsoft bought Skype and announced today that Skype for Asterisk will be shuttered. Yep, looks like Skype will be for LINC, maybe a few select partners, and maybe a reborn Response Point program.

IBM's New(er) Strategies

March 29, 2011

Image via Wikipedia

At IBM's Lotusphere this year (Feb. 1), IBM rolled out strategies for Cloud and Social Media.

IBM identified 5 ways that partners could benefit from the Cloud. They are as follows:

  1. Cloud Application Providers - deliver business apps via a subscription model through the cloud such as SAAS
  2. Cloud Builders - design, build and manage clients’ cloud needs, typically integrating with existing infrastructure.
  3. Cloud Infrastructure Providers - provide a public cloud infrastructure or Platform as a Service (PaaS) on which app can be hosted.
  4. Cloud Services Solution Providers - resell multiple public cloud services and offer complementary services such as training and integration.
  5. Cloud Technology Providers - provide the tools, services, and technologies, such as cloud management, billing metering and monitoring — that help clients use the cloud more effectively.

These are ways for VAR's to stay in the business of providing applications and associated services.

According to some PR sent my way, " IBM is the largest consumer of social technologies.

My EarthLink Strategy

March 4, 2011

When I analyze the four CLEC components of the new EarthLink Business, I wonder what Atlanta will do with it.

Deltacom had a huge fiber network (IFN) that essentially went under-utilized. In my experience, many employees did not know about IFN. Assets like lit buildings, collocations, colo gear, and the fiber maps are crucial to revenue generation from those hard cost assets.

Two More Acquisitions

February 9, 2011

According to a letter to PAETEC employees, "Earlier today, we announced plans to acquire XETA Technologies, Inc. which will dramatically expand our capabilities to serve customers with unique, equipment-based solutions nationwide. XETA is very similar to Quagga (or what we used to call PAETEC ISG), providing innovative solutions to enterprise customers while delivering exceptional customer service."

PAETEC is using this $61M acquisition to boost its Managed Services business to the enterprise space. But at the same time they are worrying the Channel.

Cox Business on Hosted PBX Roll Out

January 20, 2011

I recently interviewed Mike Bolognini, vice president of Cox Business and Hospitality Network in Las Vegas, about the planned rollout of Hosted PBX in Southern Nevada. Below are Mr. Bolognini's responses.

RAD: What is the biggest challenge you will face as you plan the rollout of Hosted PBX in Southern Nevada?

COX: The introduction of any new technology brings with it a learning curve.
