This Might Be Big

As I mentioned after Vegas, MITEL is buying Polycom for almost $2B according to Reuters.

Polycom brand to be retained, but the execs at Polycom lost this battle. CEO and CFO of MITEL stay in roles and the combined org is headquartered in Canada, much to the delight of Canada and the tax burdens.

MITEL bought Aastra in 2014 for $400M.

Why Did Google Add Landline?

Google decided that they needed to add voice to offer a triple-play. So for $10 you can have a landline equivalent. I have a bunch of questions.

One, if you only have 120,000 subscribers*, do you think that not having triple-play was the problem?

Have not heard this brand in a while: BROCADE. Where have they been? I guess they needed to make some noise, so they are buying Ruckus Wireless for $1.2 Billion.

Telecom Tidbits (Part 2431)

On Friday (April 1), Frontier takes over Verizon's territory in Florida, Cali and Texas. "The $10.5 billion acquisition is a big move for Frontier.... The company's current workforce of 19,200 will increase to about 29,200 and its customer base will jump from 3.4 million people to 7.1 million. The move will also boost Frontier's annual revenue from $5.6 billion to $11.4 billion." [source]

What is Verizon Doing?

After the rumors a couple of weeks ago that were covered by me, Rich Tehrani, TMC's TechZone and Ramblings, Verizon put an offer on a slightly used CLEC with fiber and spectrum for $1.8 Billion. VZ will be buying it directly from Carl Icahn who owns XO. VZ might not be able to take ownership for 2017 due to approvals needed.

According to Bloomberg, "Verizon Communications Inc. agreed to buy fiber-optic networks from Carl Icahn's XO Communications LLC and lease spectrum for about $1.8 billion, giving the nation's largest wireless carrier more Internet bandwidth for corporate clients and airwaves to test faster wireless technology."

Some interesting stats I have seen.

Saw stats that Vonage has 514,000 business seats.

"Birch recently announced the addition of 80,000 buildings to its Metro-Fiber network in November 2015." I wonder which cable provider they signed a wholesale agreement.

"Broadvoice brings its significant growth trajectory to the initiative: It serves more than 200,000 customers, with its business segment growing by 125% in 2015 alone." [CV mag]

A Big Deal in the Works?

The rumors are swirling about a couple of big deals in the works. I think many folks would like to see Comcast buy T-Mobile.

I don't think anyone wants to buy Sprint, whose wireline - the old Pin Drop fiber Network - is only bringing in $581 million in revenue these days. That won't help offset the $33.8 Billion in debt that is hanging over them.

End of Year News Tidbits (Part 2425)

As we end this year, there has been a flurry of "news".

Sprint gave its employees layoffs for the holidays. Despite the cash from Softbank, Sprint is losing ground to T-Mobile and has little hope of catching up to Ma and Pa Bell (ATT and VZW). It isn't about price as much as it IS about a quality network.

Non-competitive Broadband

The FCC defines broadband at 25 Mbps by 3 Mbps. At that speed, most Americans have one choice: cable!

How funny is it that telcos had DSL in the Lab in the late 1960s and didn't roll it out until Covad, Northpoint and Rhythms basically forced their hand. They then pushed all 3 into bankruptcy to be the sole high speed Internet providers -- except for a smattering of independent ISPs that they would kill off later.

Host.Net CEO Retires

I remember back when it was BroadbandOne, founded in 1996 and mainly sold bandwidth nationally. Then the company bought WV Fiber. Then it became Host.Net with a pretty impressive data center in Boca Raton, Florida. A lot has happened - and now CEO Jeffrey Davis is retiring.
