News Tidbits Part 2923

November 30, 2015

A lot of lit tidbits popping up. If you follow me on twitter, then you may have seen some of this already.

Cyber Monday crashed Target.com, but Tom Peters' fans crashed dropbox. Tom Peters put out an email to subscribers this morning with links to 14 chapters of Tom's top topics including Excellence, Execution and more.

The Move Into Canada

November 24, 2015

RingCentral has a deal in place with TELUS, a telecom company like AT&T in Canada. 8x8 has had its Virtual Office suite in Canada since 2013. Today, Zayo announced that they were buying Allstream, a division of MTS in Canada. Allstream has a 35,000 km fibre-optic network and provides communications services to enterprise clients including the Canadian government.

Mergers, Acquisitions and Moves

November 9, 2015

There has been a lot of activity in the last couple of weeks in the telecom sector. Here are the highlights.

Verizon decided to put its Enterprise business up for sale for $10B. Rumor has it that the data center business (formerly known as Terremark) has been up for sale for a while.

The Google Hype Machine

October 29, 2015

When Google Fiber enters a market, the Duopoly gets worried. And this is great for consumers. However, I am watching the Hype Machine from inside Tampa after Google Fiber announced that Google Fiber MAY come to Tampa (and Jacksonville, FL; and Oklahoma City).

All of Tampa is acting like they won the lottery.

News Tidbits Part 2920

October 15, 2015

Alan Percy at Dialogic has a nice write up of our panel about Open Source for service providers from ITEXPO. The panel discussion with Dialogic, XO and Netsapiens was so good that I am sorry it was not recorded. Read it here and at the end of the post sign up for the study data.

Fiber to the Tower is still driving growth for RLECs. Fairpoint is even seeing a need to start a construction division.

The Cable Triumverate

October 4, 2015

At a master agency, Microcorp One-on-One, the Cable 3 Sisters gave a presentation together. They have been sharing booth space for a couple of years - and presenting together for a while. This was my first view of it.

The push is on to fiber.

The Broadband Competition Problem

September 23, 2015

Big discussion over at AVC on Fred Wilson's blog post about the lack of broadband competition. After the broadband report came out, this apparently was a shock to some:

"Today, nearly 40 percent of American households either do not have the option of purchasing a wired 10 Mbps connection or they must buy it from a single provider. Three out of four Americans do not have a choice of providers for broadband at 25 Mbps, the speed increasingly recognized as a baseline for broadband access."

The discussion revolves around - surprise - arbitrage! There would be investment IF there was enough money in last mile residential; if regulation was lighter; if, if, if.

FCC Moves on Frontier and the Internet

September 14, 2015

So the FCC set the clock on the Charter-TWC merger. Part of the order explains how confidential information will be handled. (This is not the first merger with confidential company info.) The two Republican Commissioners on the FCC are complaining loudly -- as they have over every order passed by this Commission. FCC Commish Ajit Pai is often belittling the FCC CHair and his decisions publicly.

Integra Expands With Fiber Buy

August 18, 2015

Integra is in the process of re-invention. Integra re-organized and revived the Electric Lightwave brand. CEO Kevin O'Hara was replaced by a board member and the HQ moved to Vancouver. But it looks like it will stick with its fiber first focus.

Fiber Play: NTELOS Bought by Shentel

August 13, 2015

It is all about fiber. Whether it is fiber-to-the-home or fiber lit buildings, the bankers love the word fiber. (I will refrain from jokes about constipated personalities here.)

CenturyLink keeps announcing fiber-to-the-home plans.
