Follow the Money

May 4, 2016

Where is the investment money going?

Did you see that Apple had a revenue problem? Not as many iPhones are selling. "Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) says the mobile wave, which is split between mobile phones (voice/SMS) and smartphones, is coming to an end, and the next obvious market for growth is cars." Ben's blog is here and the slide deck is here.

Why Are You Calling Me?

April 21, 2016

Facebook Messanger is used by 900 million people in form or another (desktop, laptop, tablet, iOS, Android, Windows). Messenger already rolled out voice and video calls via the chat app. "Mark Zuckerberg announced that Messenger already made up 10 percent of all mobile VoIP calls globally," according to TechCrunch. Now you can "start a group VoIP audio call from any group chat." Conference calls started via group chat.

Why Do You Look at an iPhone That Way?

April 7, 2016

The promise of the iPhone wasn't that you could make HD voice calls. Actually the original promise was a beautifully designed cellphone. Then it became more with iTunes and the app store and the ecosystem.

The ecosystem is the environment around software like Apple, Amazon, Google or Microsoft.

It Will Be an Outsider That Kicks Your Butt

February 22, 2016

Bloomberg has an article about Facebook at Mobile World Congress and how FB looks like a competitor to telcos. FM Messenger, WhatsApp (that FB owns), SnapChat, Skype, Slack, and many other messaging apps are video and voice enabled (in many cases thanks to WebRTC). More minutes are moving away from telcos. At least, the US cellcos have realized that they are in the dumb pipe bytes business.

Is Mobile the Answer for UC?

October 9, 2015

I moderated a session at ITEXPO West on profitability for VoIP Providers. Mind you, one panelist was Voxvalley who is a mobile app provider for ITSPs, but it seems that everyone thinks the only way to make money in VoIP is tied to the mobile phone. I disagree. If you think that the saving grace for your UC service is mobile, you are screwed.

Analysts' Views: Part 1

July 7, 2015

Reading Jeff Kagan's take on the Big 3 Telcos - Ma Bell, Pa Bell and C-Link - makes me think that analysts only read press releases. Or just talk to the PR department.

In that piece, Kagan says he is talking about wireline, but his view of AT&T is based almost entirely on mobility. To be fair, most of Ma Bell's attention is cellular - even in Mexico and Latin America it is all cellular all the time.

Where is the VoIP Market is Going?

May 11, 2015

I have been working on this post for a while. I even asked a couple of people in the industry where they thought the Hosted PBX market was going. A few said that integration was going to be important for customers to realize the full impact of Unified Communications. That is certainly true especially at mid-market and larger.

A New Portal, Mobile App Every Week

April 27, 2015

At the channel show, a company that develops mobile apps wanted to meet with me. They have a beta app with a large supplier. It does analytics and might make sharing collateral easier. It is just one more portal, one more app that gets announced.

The Latest Buzz(words) to Offer

April 22, 2015

The CLEC crowd is trying to move beyond the legacy services of network and minutes. Hard to do when customers still want to buy it. In much of the marketing, the services with the most buzz are: Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), Managed WiFi and mobility.

Under UCaaS I will include Collaboration, so Lync, Office 365, Sharepoint, Dropbox, conferencing flavors (audio, web, video), contact centers and the like.

Mobile Phones are Hyperlinks

April 21, 2015

At SXSW, Biz Stone of twitter founding fame, made a comment "Mobile phones are hyperlinks of humanity." Hugh MacLeod expounded on that mobile phones are the new window to the hyper-connected world.

It is funny I read that today as the digital landscape is about to change. Google is changing its search algorithm for mobile. Sites get a higher ranking for being mobile ready.
