Traditionally, communications service providers (CSPs) have treated the field service aspect of their organization as a cost center. Field technicians engaged in maintenance activities were simply a part of the cost of doing business.  More recently, the communications industry in general and the field service arena in particular, has been disrupted by immense changes in the customer profile, service expectations, and behaviors.

Field service is often the only face of the company that a customer will ever see, so it’s not a surprise that CSPs are striving to make a positive impact on customers in this realm. Achieving full potential in field service saves CSPs a lot of time and money. Localphone.com Offering Free Calls To Taiwan

Localphone.com is rewarding customers with unlimited free calls to Taiwan to Taiwan for a week. The free offer applies to calls made to landline numbers in Taiwan and is available to all Localphone customers from 12pm GMT 8th November until 12pm GMT 15th November 2012.

After the promotion ends calls to Taiwan will be charged at the normal cheap Localphone rate of 1.6¢ USD / 0.8p GBP or 1.4c EUR per minute.

CEO of Localphone, Paul Cusack said, ‘At Localphone we like to reward our loyal customers and thank them for continuing to use the service.  This week, we’re giving away free calls to Taiwan and we hope our customers make the most of the offer to call their loved ones abroad.’

For users who are not already Localphone customers, they can sign up to Localphone for free and then they will be eligible to call Taiwan for free.

At AstriCon we finally heard about the new features in Asterisk 11. One of the most exciting features is WebRTC, which I wrote about earlier, including videos. On the last day of AstriCon, four members of the Asterisk team got on stage in front of hundreds of AstriCon attendees and unveiled what's new in Asterisk 11, including insights as to how and why they added these particular features. One new feature is a unique Call IDs record associated to each and every call to enable powerful Call ID logging.

WebRTC Demo Plus WebRTC Asterisk Integration

At AstriCon at sat in a jam-packed session on WebRTC, which featured Digium's Joshua Colp and Voxeo Labs / Tropo's Tim Panton. The talk explained how WebRTC is going to change the communications landscape, but more than that they did an actual demo showing a browser-based VoIP call to a WebRTC-enabled Tropo application. The source code was ridiculously short and simple, which means a lot of the complexity has been modularized into the WebRTC spec. I captured the video using my iPhone 4S in 3 video segments.
