What Happened to Redundancy?

May 18, 2010

I don't know if you have been reading about the outages that the Cloud Providers have been having. Rackspace, Amazon, Terremark to name a few have experienced outages in the last six months.

My question is What Happened to Redundancy?

The main selling point of these data centers is Redundancy. You know, Battery backup, Generator (for auxillary power), in some cases dual electrical grid power feeds.

A vehicle took out a transformer on a utility pole in instances at both Rackspace and Amazon. But shouldn't the battery backup work for at least 45 minutes?

Tampa as an iPhone App Hub

April 5, 2010

Tampa Bay may not be a top tech hub in the US, but I think that we certainly hold our own when it comes to iPhone Application Development. We have a few shining stars in that department and I have had the pleasure of meeting them when I was organizing the original BarCamp Tampa Bay.

First up is Jody Haneke of Haneke Design. Haneke has an impressive list of clients and recently completed an iPhone app for HP. Haneke was on stage at DEMO 2009 in the fall with fellow Tampa CEO Steve Tingiris of, when Enthusem launched with its Haneke designed iPhone app.

How Do They Avoid Being Just the Dumb Pipe

February 11, 2010

On LinkedIn there was a question in the Telecom Executives Business Network group: "How can a Telco Service Provider value chain defend itself from the attack by the emerging "Cloud" services? My understanding is that the emerging "cloud" services remove value-add and differentiation from the Telco service providers which are cornered to act just as the bit-stream providers (especially for the retail market)."

My answer to that was as follows:

Most telco carriers worry about becoming a Dumb Pipe. Isenberg told them this would happen.

Making Money in IP Communications

January 20, 2010

In a room filled with VAR's, inter-connects and VoIP resellers (and one investor), our ITEXPO panel this morning discussed making money from IP communications.

How does the indirect channel make money from IP? It is SO different from TDM. This isn't really plug-and-play services.

New Year's Resolutions Going Social

December 21, 2009

In reading about Pat Phelan giving up smoking, I saw his mention of the Philips DirectLife is making exercise and weight loss a social thing. If you like the NordicTrac, the social piece is the "iFit® Live allows you to experience trails all over the world. Work out with Jillian Michaels, race against your Facebook® friends and receive automatic workout downloads every day!"

By sharing your goals to quit smoking and lose weight with your friends and family, you can get support. Not everyone can afford a coach or personal trainer.

Does Bundling Work? It depends. Are you using a Bundle for Customer Retention or Customer Acquisition?

Top Trends for Agents

October 11, 2009

I'm in Atlanta speaking at the Microcorp One-on-One event about Trends in 2010. The three trends that I see for agents are the following: Applications, Quality of Service (QOS), and Mobile Broadband (MBB). But they are kind of inter-dependent. Ubiquious broadband leads to innovative uses and applications.

How to Optimize a WAN

October 9, 2009

My buddy, Derek Thompson, just started at Fishnet Security. Besides peddling Bluecoat and SonicWall Managed Services, he is also selling WAN Optimization. While I have heard of this, I had no idea what it was or how it worked. So Derek invited me to sit down with Doug Kruger of Riverbed.
