Comcast may fear competition and bill people for services that they did not receive, but they do have a $6B CLEC business. Most carriers can't say that.

Now the broadband game is changing.

20 Years and what?

So we are at the 20 year anniversary of the Telecom Act of 1996. So many companies have come and gone. So many billions have been invested. And yet the largest telecom providers are Comcast, AT&T and Verizon.

Non-competitive Broadband

The FCC defines broadband at 25 Mbps by 3 Mbps. At that speed, most Americans have one choice: cable!

How funny is it that telcos had DSL in the Lab in the late 1960s and didn't roll it out until Covad, Northpoint and Rhythms basically forced their hand. They then pushed all 3 into bankruptcy to be the sole high speed Internet providers -- except for a smattering of independent ISPs that they would kill off later.

Mergers, Acquisitions and Moves

There has been a lot of activity in the last couple of weeks in the telecom sector. Here are the highlights.

Verizon decided to put its Enterprise business up for sale for $10B. Rumor has it that the data center business (formerly known as Terremark) has been up for sale for a while.

Some Companies Are Doing Well, Some Not

The quarterly revenue numbers are coming in with some companies doing well, some notsomuch.

The cablecos are doing well. The top 4 (public) MSOs - Comcast, TWC, Charter, Cablevision - "these four companies alone accounted for about 22% ($8.8 billion) of the $40 billion annual special access market in 2014," according to a Forbes columnist.

"Comcast's business services revenue increased 21.9% in 2014 and 26.4% in 2013." Comcast Business does $1.2B per quarter - making them one of the largest CLECs!

TV is Moving to the Internet

TWC is trialing Internet TV. "The beta service will let some customers get online Internet TV services, without requiring a cable connection, through a Roku 3 device," according to eweek.

Comcast Xfinity, Verizon, Boingo, DISH (Sling TV) have joined Hulu, HBO, Starz, and CBS with streaming TV services. It will all move to IP -- not necessarily over the Internet.

Juniper is a Cable Pusher

Juniper Networks is now pushing its VAR partners into the cable channel, getting them to sell cable services. It is pitched as cable is the cable to connect to the cloud. [see webcast video here] Comcast Business was on the webinar but they pitched their sisters too.

The Cable Triumverate

At a master agency, Microcorp One-on-One, the Cable 3 Sisters gave a presentation together. They have been sharing booth space for a couple of years - and presenting together for a while. This was my first view of it.

The push is on to fiber.
