Predictions for 2013

December 19, 2012

CenturyLink Biz has an ebook out with predictions for 2013 and beyond. M2M, mobility, cloud - all just mind blowing stuff . It's prediction time obviously. Let me say that 2013 can go a couple of ways - DC gets its collective act together to improve the financial situation or it doesn't.

Cloudy Math

December 10, 2012

There is a lot of talk about the big money that Agents and VAR's can make if they just switch over to sell Managed Services and Cloud Services. Here are some facts about cloud.

M5 had the highest ARPU (average invoice per customer) when ShoreTel bought them - at $2000. Most other cloud communications providers hint at lower ARPU - maybe around $1000 per customer.

Beware of Cable

December 6, 2012

On the one hand, you have the Top MSO's - Comcast, TWC, Cox, Charter, Cablevision and Bright House - taking market share rapidly, primarily due to its better broadband bargain and its willingness to build out fiber.

On the other hand, cable sells a commodity item at low prices. Obviously, not just cable prices are low, T1's are under $300 in major areas; EoC is inexpensive; and Internet bandwidth in major hubs is under $1 per MB! It is taking more and more sales to make a living.

More on the Microcorp and TDMobility Deal

November 6, 2012

Microcorp announced a deal with TDMobility (here and here). I have written about TDMobility before (most recently here and before), where I proposed that it would be a small leap for TDMobility to become a master agency. Instead, TDMobility teamed up with a master agent, Microcorp, instead.

Tech Data already has a direct relationship with XO.

Tough Talk About the Channel - VARs and Agents

The Changing VAR World

October 15, 2012

Opening evening at UBM's BoB Conference was a panel discussion about the change in the VAR and MSP community. This is a collection of tweets about the panel discussion #bob12.

Social Media (SM) , mobility, are cloud - threats to some, opportunities to some - both to many.

Things VAR's Will Love About Selling Telecom

September 28, 2012

As the carriers look to the VAR space as the new sales channel, I would like to tell the VAR community a few things that they will love about selling telecom.

1) Install dates that are fluid. Porting numbers happen at the whim of the carriers you are porting from. The FOC date (when carriers install circuits) will move without notice or at the most a day's notice.

2) Your current partners - HP, IBM, Microsoft or Cisco - have never snaked a deal from you, but in telecom it will happen often.

The VAR/Agent Comparison

September 12, 2012

At Channel Partners Expo in Orlando for TCA. Our first member networking event last night went very well with a good sized crowd. Today we have the TCA's 6th Channel Chief Summit with guest speaker John Zanni of Parallels.

The top Channel executives and even the bigger Master Agencies are all chasing VAR's. And this show is so cloud themed an agent would be hard pressed to find a telco element, which I think leads to less Agents, but perhaps not more VARs, since they have their own shows, including DreamForce this week.

While taking with one channel head, he mentioned that the numbers guys always want justification to continuing paying on that line item called commissions.

The Alternate to Cloud

August 15, 2012

For Agents that just don't want to go cloud, there are some alternatives. In my latest book, SELLECOM 2: Selling Cloud Services, there are a few products that Agents can sell that still fall inside the Replacement services umbrella. T1, broadband, cellular, voice are all replacement services for the transactional agent. That road is bumpy.
