What Did I Miss Part 34

September 4, 2014

Merger Details Emerge

In the mix of the Comcast-TWC merger will emerge a new MSO created by divestitures and swaps called GreatLand Connections, previously called SpinCo. Charter will own one-third and operate it, says Telecompetitor.

The FCC has received a lot of comments on this merger docket and many are anti-merger. I think it would be a mess for consumers - and the result would be a much larger Comcast that is too large already.

Innovation isn't About Replacement

August 25, 2014

In an article about the over-valuation of Uber, was this tidbit:

"In 1980, McKinsey & Company was commissioned by AT&T (whose Bell Labs had invented cellular telephony) to forecast cell phone penetration in the U.S. by 2000. The consultant's prediction, 900,000 subscribers, was less than 1% of the actual figure, 109 Million.

What Did I Miss?

August 15, 2014

A couple of data center acquisitions happened (and some other notes). Shaw Communications, a Canadian cableco, came down to acquire the data center company, ViaWest, for about $1.2 Billion from the private equity owners. [pr]

The other move: Alpheus bought StratITsphere's retail datacenter business.

It's TruPhone's World

July 9, 2014

Rich Tehrani ran TruPhone's service through the real world lab after doing an interview with them [here].

I don't travel internationally (domestic travel is enough of a pain in the ass to deal with. Don't get me started.) But the TruPhone World plan is a cool idea: 1 SIM card for 66 countries for voice, text and data. Boom!

Mobile Device Management is Booming

June 24, 2014

A couple weeks ago a buddy called me to ask about a hot product that he heard was selling like hotcakes - MDM - mobile device management.

Apparently, MetTel is doing a bang up job selling MDM via a white-label arrangement from Airwatch.

MDM is trending for companies that are worried about controlling emails, documents, files and confidential information from flowing out of the company. MDM allows for security measures on smartphones, laptops, tablets and its users.

Scale Won't Fix Sprint

March 12, 2014

Softbank's CEO thinks that buying T-Mobile will solve Sprint's ailments. Scale is not the issue here. Poor strategy is one problem. Want examples: the Nextel integration; destroying the Nextel brand; WiMax for 4G; Clearwire two-stepping - need I go on?

It's Good to Know Your VoIP Numbers

January 20, 2014

8x8 and RingCentral presented at the Needham conference last week. 8x8 has its investor prezo available for a look see (HERE). I wish RC and others did. Not just so I could examine the numbers in order to rank the Hosted VoIP/UC players but to get a detailed view of the industry after ten years of slogging VoIP.

Re-Vamping Telecom

December 6, 2013

The FCC has already made some moves to revamp telecom. There was USF reform, funding for broadband, elimination of a lot of regulations, pilot test with Vonage on direct DID access and the TDM-to-IP migration.

The Broadband money (NTIA, BIP, BTOP) as well as the Lifeline (Obama phone) program has seen its share of abuses, but billion dollar programs will do that. The FCC needs to tighten that up.

If Mobile is Everything

December 2, 2013

Fred Wilson repeats that Mobile is Eating the World. It might be just what I am reading (my influence bias). It's all about tablets or smartphones. Where does that leave your business in 2 or 3 years?

M&A This Week

November 15, 2013

IBM jumped into MDM (mobile device management) with its purchase of Fiberlink. "Fiberlink's MaaS360 cloud-based offerings, IBM will expand its bring your own device (BYOD) capabilities to deliver a complete mobile management and security solution through IBM MobileFirst that includes trusted transactions and security intelligence capabilities for mobile apps, users, content and data." [source] Fiberlink was the first MDM firm to support Google Glass.

8x8 is really branching out. First with Softbank in Japan in cloud and now buying a UK service provider.
