My Cynical View

February 24, 2015

Often people call me cynical. I guess you can look at it that way. In my view, this industry has been through almost $2 Trillion dollars in investment money since 1996. What do we have to show for it?

Isn't This Crazy?

Pay to Play

January 3, 2014

One common question, "How do you get listed in a research study?" My answer: It's pay to play. And people look at me, thinking, "What a cynic." Well, I am rather cynical, but that doesn't mean what I said wasn't true.

Take a look at any research study about UCaaS or some other buzzword service. Is it a comprehensive list of the true players in the space?

The NSA Spying Scandal isn't New

June 7, 2013

Remember back in 2003 when a whistleblower from AT&T pointed out Room 641A that the NSA used to spy on all AT&T long distance calls and Internet traffic? Verizon and Qwest denied they did, too.

Put on your foil hat because I am going to make some crazy points.

The FCC only wants to deal with a few companies, not thousands of them.

Regulating the Internet

December 10, 2012

While the ITU / UN take over of the Internet was being debunked, AT&T has been making moves of its own. They even have the help of the Astroturf groups as they try to dismantle the copper plant and reassert their Monopoly. (more about that at WSJ)

The FCC is working on two fronts.

Robo-Calls

May 11, 2012

I need to learn not to answer the phone if I don't know the caller. It's always robo-calls. And it is usually a Level3 number! 407-412-9892 was the Florida PAL.

Why I Was Going to Run for Congress

December 10, 2011

This is kind of a political rant, so fair warning and I apologize if I offend you in advance.

Voter Suppressionmedia green zones like in Baghdad (and here), indefinite detention of Americans by military, the revolving door between lobbyists and governmentSOPACongressional insider trading, shorting on the debt ceiling, re-districting to keep power - aren't we tired of this crap yet? I am. Very tired.

To One of the Weird Ones

October 6, 2011

So your streams are probably filled with Steve Jobs links today. For repeating some of it here I apologize in advance. Seth Godin wrote a short eulogy to Steve Jobs yesterday. He spoke about the devices he created.

Unemployment and the Digital Divide

July 18, 2011

In this article in TechCrunch, you will read an interesting look at how Silicon Valley and the march of technology are causing a Digital Divide.

Every online sale takes away from brick-and-mortar business just as Wal-mart has run over mom-and-pop stores, each resulting in empty storefronts and unemployment. When we start automating basic jobs - like robots to make fast food burgers - we have to realize that the unemployed and the unemployable will grow. (There 's a great article in The Atlantic about what it's like to be unemployed for an extended time.

Craig's Lifetime of Customer Service

June 15, 2011

Craig Newmark of craigslist spoke at the CoolTech event in Tampa last Friday. It was a good speech from a nerd with a dry sense of geeky humor. (Not everyone got it.) He was doing his best to "simulate social behavior", he said. He had 3 themes that he repeated throughout the talk (that's kind of my style of speaking, too): Customer Service, Doing what's Right, and the Common Good. Craig was introduced by his former attorney, Brett Britton, as a Bad ass.
