Shhh... Don't Tell Google

I guess some secrets are meant to be more secret than others.

Yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph reported on “secret, high-level talks” between the likes of Vodafone, France Telecom, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison Whampoa, Telecom Italia and Cingular.

The telecom giants are apparently adopting the “Let’s-hide-in-plain-sight” strategy as this “secret, high-level” summit will take place at — shhhh… don’t tell anyone — 3GSM. Yes that’s right. 3GSM, the wireless industry’s largest gathering.

Oh yeah… the reason these giants are allegedly getting together is to waylay Google and Yahoo!, who by the way, should not be told of this meeting. It’s supposed to be a surprise. The headline of the Telegraph piece says so:

“Mobile Giants Plot Secret Rival to Google”

Read on however, and you see that the article claims:

“The networks may decide to go with an existing search engine and use their combined might to secure a majority slice of the income.”

Now let’s see… the surprise is that the world’s largest mobile network operators are ganging up on poor little Yahoo! and Google to — GASP! — demand a cut of their mobile search revenue?

You mean, like the deals that Google and Yahoo! have been cutting with network operators EVERYWHERE?

Just whatever you do, please don’t tell anyone.

It’s a secret.
