Gores Siemens Acquisition: More Challenges Ahead For Customers

Enterprises need to think three times before looking at post acquisition Gores Siemens Enterprise Networking (SEN).

1. SEN didn't have a data play and used to partner with a number of data vendors. Now they have had a tier 3 data player thrust on them, previously Enterasys, previously Cabletron. If you are looking for a data solution, Nortel Business Optimized Networking is a lower risk approach delivering 7x the reliability, 20x the performance, requiring 40% less energy and delivering up to 50% lower TCO compared to Cisco.

2. Are you a Microsoft shop? SEN used to be very closely aligned with Microsoft but that relationship has gone belly up. So how will Gores-SEN meet your UC needs? Don't go there. Better consider the Nortel-Microsoft Innovative Communications Alliance with 800 wins to date.

3. Are you an IBM shop? SEN OEM'd voice technology to IBM, so no reason to consider Gores-SEN as well? I would say forget it. The Nortel BM Alliance includes joint marketing and selling, UC software solutions for SMBs (SCS500), joint UC solutions, SOA for Communications Enabled Applications, and joint professional services.

Finally, you should additionally be concerned on how Gores is going to satisfy its investment targets. Are cost cutting and staff reductions planned?

A Nortel shill has the audacity to throw stones at Siemens? When was the last time Nortel showed a profit? (HINT HINT, it wasn't during today's earnings announcement!)

Pick up that stone when your own stock isn't in freefall to ZERO.

Better yet, go back to cooking the books...now THAT'S something Nortel's good at.

Wow this might be one of the most irresponsible and FUD filled comments I have ever read. Nortel was one of the companies pursuing SEN but lets face it folks that would have been the most undesirable combination. So you can chalk this article up to Sour Grapes.

The facts
Siemens has not been dumped by Microsoft nor have they dumped Microsoft. The most ironic thing is that the Siemens/Micrsoft integration is as good as anything currently in the market between Nortel and Microsft. What Siemens has done is built the first and only SOA based UC portfolio capable of integrating into any and all line of business apps. Nortel has just started down the road to a true SOA architecture. 90% of their porfolio is outdated and in desparate need of a refresh. Their networking infrastructure is horrible and the so called standars based CS 2100 is so filled with proprietary interfaces it is unimaginable how they claim an open sip based architecture. The spring voicecon RFP had Nortel claim over 400 SIP based features (of course they didnt tell anyone it was all done via feature code.

Siemens hsa demonstraged true open integration with the highlight being IBM selecting Siemens as their middlewar play for integration of the IBM UC software portfolio. Something no Tier 1 vendor could have accomplished. Long story short folks. Whenever you see a post such as the one above you should definitely take it with a grain of salt.

For sure customers will have some questions without answers yet. It was one week ago the announcment.
But, for sure, Nortel is not a good option.
Nortel lost their opportunity when bought Bay Networks and just "hide" it inside a huge / wasted organization.
As Gores Group leading Enterasys / SEN new organization we will see a efficiency at this time.

Sounds like someone is getting a little nervous

Very interesting argument in the first paragraph:
SEN uses a tier 3 data player so go with Nortel because Nortel is better than Cisco. Is Nortel better than Enterasys? Financially, technologically -- probably not. Branding -- isn't everybody better than Enterasys?
