TMC Gets Written up in Norwalk Hour Newspaper

June 4, 2010

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said.

DashPad Brings Widgets to iPad via Safari

June 4, 2010

For most developers, Apple's App Store is a dream as it allows you to publish an application, allow Cupertino to deal with distribution and then receive regular paychecks as products are purchased and downloaded. That is of course unless your application or class of apps find itself/themselves in Apple's crosshairs. Most recently Apple decided that widget-based apps and those which create their own desktops will be banned from the company's store - even if they have been approved in the past.

Coincidentally a company called PXL Creations recently released a Safari-based desktop called DashPad for the iPad which supports its own custom widgets for a clock, calendar, Yellow Pages, calculator, unit converter and notepad.

Yahoo and Nokia Sync on Maps and More

May 25, 2010

Yahoo is a web powerhouse in terms of page views - ranked number four in the world by Alexa.com. While the company seems to get a fraction of the press that Google gets - and more recently less than Twitter and Facebook as well, it is an integral player in not only the web but the mobile web. Again, another area where Yahoo! seems to be more successful than the media would indicate.

Web traffic ranking Alexa, May 25, 2010 1 Google 2 Facebook 3 Youtube 4 Yahoo 5 Live 6 Wikipedia 7 Baidu 8 Blogger 9 MSN 10 QQ

According to M:Metrics in a study which took place last August, Yahoo reaches 35 million mobile unique users per month.

TMC Celebrates 38-Year Anniversary

May 24, 2010

How do companies make it through gut-wrenching industry and technological change without going under?

I do my best to wish every TMC a team member a Happy TMC Anniversary and as such the start date of all of our full-time members are in my calendar so I can be the one to send them this greeting (If I forgot you in the past - please accept my apologies). Last week I noticed that it was the anniversary of Nadji Tehrani, the company Founder & Chairman, my father and the person who decided to start this company in 1972. Funny, I never noticed his start date on my calendar before - and it occurred to me that this was TMC's 38-year anniversary.

Lightwave ONE Web Conference site now up

May 22, 2010

I have heard a number of positive comments regarding the addition of an optical event at ITEXPO this fall. Thanks for all your comments. As I mentioned recently, Lightwave ONE which stands for "Optical Networks for Enterprises" will be collocated with ITEXPO Oct 4-6 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.

As you likely know, we at TMC do our best to ensure we provide the most complete educational experience we can under one roof.

Google Buys GIPS - Here's Why

May 18, 2010

When it comes to enabling technology, Google's new mantra is its better to be needed than liked

I first met the company called Global IP Sound around 2002 at TMC's ITEXPO and Pulvermedia's VON expos. What differentiated the company tome at first was the company's ability to power wireless VoIP calls over PDAs - specifically Compaq iPAQs via a low-bandwidth codec. As you can imagine, at the time, the codec needed to not only be low-bandwidth due to the slow wireless connections but also had to be super-optimized because processors in PDAs at the time were not powerful.

Google Stars - Life Used to be So Simple

March 6, 2010

Recently I started seeing stars on all my Google search results and I have to tell you, I am confused. I googled Google Stars and got a result which wasn't starred. Does that mean it isn't good?

Google Stimulus Plan

March 3, 2010

If you listen to politicians you would think that only government can create jobs and help the country in a time of need. I am constantly amazed at the capacity of people who have spent little to no time in the private sector proclaim to be experts regarding what companies are capable of doing. But this post is not meant to bash politicians; after all they don't listen to you, why would they pay attention to me?

Having said, that it is worth checking out this article from Olga Kharif, one of the top writers at BusinessWeek (OK she wrote about me in the past so I am a bit - a wee bit anyway biased) which discusses how towns are clamoring for Google to provide broadband in their areas.

Chinese Schools Say They Didn't Hack Google

February 23, 2010

What? Us? Do we look like hackers to you?

Where is James Bond when you need him? The ongoing saga between China and a number of companies who have been hacked from the country takes yet another twist.
