Mosquito Magnet Question

I have been getting lots of questions about the Mosquito Magnet — in fact it is weird how many e-mails I get because of blog entries. Anyway, I received this e-mail today and figured others have the same questions, so my answer is at the bottom.

My unit worked great for a year by the way and I haven’t taken it out of storage this year. I probably should as there are more bugs this year than I recall seeing in many years.

Hi friend,

I found your e-mail address on a posting you did re. the Mosquito Magnet,
thanks to a Google search I did for "Mosquito Magnet Tech Support".

I agree 100% with your comments that the manufacturer needs to address this
issue regarding the liquid propane source in their owner’s manual.

I am about ready to smash mine too!  I had a Liberty model that was flashing
the "fuel out" signal at me with a full tank.  (Flashing green, solid red and
yellow).  I was sent a factory refurbished unit, which worked for a week, then
did the same thing, asking for more propane.  Tech support told me yesterday
that "swapped tanks" are often contaminated with air, and clog the carbeurator
in the Mosquito Magnet.  I took a swapped tank to U-Haul, asked them to purge
it, then refill it.  Still doesn’t work.

I am curious if you were getting the same flashing green, solid red and yellow
warning, and if this went away just by replacing the tank with a new one, or if
you also had replaced the Mosquito Magnet.  Did you replace the Mosquito Magnet
too, or just switch to a new tank?

Sorry to bug you!  (Pardon the pun!)  Thanks in advance for your reply.

Best regards,
Name Withheld

Hello,

When I replaced the tank with a new one, all my troubles went away. I haven’t used it this year yet.

I recall the manual saying tat there is some compressed air you can buy from a bicycle store. The compressed carbon dioxide gas will clean the unit out.

The unit is very sensitive and I recall a tool that equalizes the pressure from the tank and the Mosquito Magnet. If you don’t use this, the system doesn’t work… At least it didn’t for me.

Good luck.

    Monquito Magnet ???
I have one (Liberty Plus), Out of warenty
and flashing red. I have purged the unit and
reset it with no results I use only new tanks
purchased last ywar so that is not the problem. Called tech support and the only good thing I got
from that was an english speeking person who seemed to be concerned about whether or not it was in warenty. Evere once in a while we make a bad decision when buying a product and this was mine.

If you ask me the manufacturer of Mosquito Magnets, American Biophysics, should be facing a class action suit from all the pissed off owners of its products. The Liberty, which I own, is the most “consumer un-friendly” piece of junk ever foisted on the American public. It is extermely unreliable and I would never recommend it to anyone. I’ve spent well over $600 for the unit and its “annual” servicing and the thing still doesn’t work. The tech suppport folks will tell you that just like an automobile it must be serviced, but considering that I’ve only run 4 or 5 tanks of propane through it over the course of 3 years it is clear that the product has not been robustly designed. If my car needed to be serviced as frequently as the Liberty does, it would qualify for return under the state “Lemon Law”!! Consumer Reports needs to take a close look if they haven’t done so already.

I purchased the Pro model several years ago and the although it worked the first year it nabbed few of the thousands of mosquitos in the yard. After the first storage season it never worked again and all AmBio will do is sell me a new unit at wholesale, Oh and repair on the old one is the same price as buying a new unit. Too good to be true is the story with my unit.

Hi there, I’m a certified repair and information center and would be happy to help with questions or servicing. If you’re in Canada, I can fix your machine and I know of several repair dealers in the US as well.
Mosquito Magnet is now owned by Woodstream Corp. and they are trying their best to get outside service centers established however given the backlog of issues and time it takes to train dealers it’s going to take a while for available service to catch up with demand.
In my experience, most machines 85% to 90%(based solely on my own sales data) work several years without issue, however the other 10%-15% truly are lemons. Trust me, it’s frustrating at all levels – I’m not a big fan of having 1 in 10 customers return with a non-working machine. However, after being serviced by one of the ‘new’ outside service centers you can expect a much higher success rate and lifespan with your Mosquito Magnet. Personally, I re-warranty everything I service and have very few repaired machines come back for a second issue within a year.
    Best, Duncan

i was wondering-do you really need to use the co2 cartridge to clear the line out? it can get expensive, especially if it doesn`t solve the problem-or could you just use compressed air from a compressor?
    anyone try this?
    thanks

I would have to say that the way the threads are for attaching the CO2 cylinders, you could use an air-compressor although I’ve never tried it before.
But the great news is that my Mosquito Magnet is now fully operational after cleaning it out with 5 of those Quick Clear CO2 cylinders. Anyone who has problems with their MM should try this solution although I can’t be positive that it will work for everyone. It’s worth a shot!

I bought the defender model a little over a year ago. It worked great last summer. We loss power during a T storm last week and I can’t get it started. Just the RED, flashing light. I know that there is a fan that runs for a few minutes when you shut the unit down. I am afraid that the power loss may have resulted in the unit over heating. Has any one else had this problem? and what did you do to fix it? I wish that there was a battery or power source that would keep the fan running in the event of a power loss. OUT of Warranty and out of luck I guess? John

My Defender has the same problem that George and John had described above. I cleaned it out with those QuickClear CO2 cylinders 5 times as suggested and lo and behold it works !!! I noticed after the 3rd or 4th cartridge that the the hiss of gas through the system suddently increased and I could see gas coming out the front nozzle. So hopefully this will be the solution to this type of problem.

I purchased the Pro model in 2003 for $1299. In 2005 just barely in warranty, the now defunct American Biophysics sent me a refurbished model. After a little more than another season with the refurbished unit, the fan will not start (again) even though the unit is supposedly running. The new parent company Woodstream Corporation told me that I was SOL. I think a class action suit would be appropriate!

i also have the defender model. really, really, frustrated with this thing. have owned it for probably 3 years and the thing has really never worked right. i’m trying this year to get it going. have used 2 quick clear cartridges so far – no luck. have also tried the “reset tool” on the propane tank – nothing doing. sounds like maybe i need to use more quick clear cartridges? overall, what a waste of time and money. When you call tech support they’re basically useless too. any thoughts?

I finally got a set and tore into the thing. about 8 screws a quick connect, then Found a huge blockage of carbon in the “pot metal” that goes into the plastic tube. when I poked it with a screw driver, it fell out and I scratched it clean with a small wire brush./ Runs great now.! I will do this every year now.
ps. the website for Mosquito magnet offered to sell me a new one at a discounted price that was near what I paid for my pro model. “F them”

I have the home garden/ defender model, I bought it from Canadian Tire in May 2006 and it worked for the first season and of coarse Canadian tire doesn’t sell them anymore, we will see what they do for there customers. In June of 2007 I had to order tools off the internet to attempt to get it going because for some reason mine didn’t come with them.I have tried everything possible, following directions to a tee a hundred times over, the piece of junk won’t start. These machines are way to sensitive, they need absolutely perfectly purged tanks, etc., even then they don’t work. I live in Saskatchewan so my only hope of repair is to ship it to Duncan, a certified repair man for this product, he has been very helpful, an excellent guy to deal with but he certainly has his hands full with these lemons…..my advise is stay far away from these machines, way to much money to operate and maintain.

I purchased my Liberty way back in 2002. It worked quite well until last year. I did some investigating this past Spring and purchased the CO2 cartridges got home and found out my old machine will not accept them. So I called WoodStream to get the Reset Tool. $25 for a little piece of plastic and it took them 2 months to ship it to me. It took dozens of calls to these idiots to find out what was taking so long. Needless to say, it still does not work.
After some trouble shooting, I think the regulator may be bad. Can I use a gas grill regulator or will I blow myself up?

  • garth prosser
    July 11, 2007 at 10:08 am

Anyone above who is still having troubles should read my prior post. Mine is running fine. the carbon build up need to be physically pushed out. it doesn’t take much, just a screw driver. pull the head apart, ~ 8 screws, disconnect the wiring, it has quick connects so it goes and comes apart easily, then knock the carbon out of the venturi. it looks like a piece of charcoal in there. that’s it!
I assume all the models are the same basic build, just some are bigger. as you face the unit, the controls on the right, the venturi and blockage will be under (behind ) the left side vent

In 2005, our family bought 3 Liberty Plus magnets for 3 different houses. I am the only one that will tackle trying to turn these forsaken machines on. It is a full time job trying to get one to work, much less 3 of them at three different houses. Thank you for letting me know that I’m not the only one with Mosquito Magnet (Liberty Plus) problems. We purchased one and it worked perfectly to start with and since then it simply will not run. After doing everything suggested by manufacturer, replacing batteries, replacing chargers, etc. it still will not run. Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your time.

Make sure you have pure propane and not a propane exchange program. It made a difference for me. Also use the CO2 cartridge to clean it out and make sure to use the tool to equalize the propane pressure.

I have the commercial pro. After getting a refurbished model as a replacement for my failed brand new one when it was just under 2 years in warranty, the refurbished one sh*t the bed. So I bit the bullet and shipped it out to mosquitomagnetrepair.com. They say that the Commercial pro was the best that had been made and that they can make the repairs to keep it ticking. They also recommend that these machines need to be tuned up every other year (at the tune of $150). Is this the price to pay for no bites? Who knows…

this will help to trouble shooting any magnet:
NOT RUNNING: try co2 three cartridges, not any more, do not use black angle adapter, only straight. if no results try another propane tank. do not worry about having the tank purged that is BS. check cord for splices or nicks; if cut,get new cord. if it’s a DEFENDER or LIBERTY: and is still not lighting send to our service center.
IF LIBERTY PLUS: charge battery again 12 hours. if still not lighting start unit with charger plugged in and battery on. do not leave charger plugged in more than 25 mins. if it doesn’t light send to our service center.
IF NEW PRO OR PRO PLUS: do same as liberty plus.
IF Liberty: not catching bugs like it use to: Send to our service center. many problems, simple tune up and adjustment. not usually any cost in parts.
MUST DO: blow out with co2 everytime u change the tank. SECRET: do while unit is hot. run unit for 3 hrs. shut off blow out turn on again. only we know that.
MUST DO: Clean out suction area on way to bag.
IF COMMERICAL PRO (OLD) OR FREEDOM: slow, low, no fan. not running, or cant’t get it to light. Trade in for newer model and get hundreds for your junker or Send to our service center. email us [email protected]

I have found another, easier way of doing what Garth Posser is talking about. Instead of taking it apart, you can just suck out all the carbon build-up. You’ll need a shop vac to do this because it is more powerful then a regular vacumm.
First, remove the two screws that hold the octenal container and remove the container itself.
Now take your vacumm and put it right over the black plastic tubing. Hold it there for about a minute.
Now if you can reverse your vacumm, hold it over the tubing for about 20 to 30 seconds.
Now, just like step one, hold the vacumm, with suction, over the tubing for about 2 minutes.
This has worked for me so far with my Defender. I’m assuming that the nose assenbly of the other models are similar to my Defender. The best part is your warrenty won’t be voided because you don’t need to open your Magnet to do this!

We live in Florida on a lagoon and I can 100% vouch that the Mosquito Magnet Liberty eliminates mosquitos COMPLETELY – when it WORKS!!
We find that we cannot be down more than perhaps three days especially after a rain otherwise the mosquitos come back and it takes a couple weeks to kill them all off again.
We are on our second Liberty. The first one was the original model without the quick clear system nor the little red plastic overfill protection balancer. Frankly, it lasted 2 years with repeated restart issues before Am.Bio. offered to replace it even outside of the warranty period because they had obvious upgrades to their new model.
Now for the second model…it worked famously for 2 years with my constact use of quick clearing at each tank change and every use of the overfill protection thing. However, it is not starting without serious effort requiring ritual incantations, bodily contortions and downright cussing!
Thanks to this forum, I am going to try the following good advice 1) getting a brand new propane tank; I’m still using 4+ year old tanks and 2) quick clearing the unit with a pack of three CO2 cylinders.
Woodstream (who bought the MM from Am.Bio) has WORTHLESS technical service. The person I spoke to mumbled so badly and had no idea what to do beyond following the exact Q&A steps outlined on the desk manual before him….totally worthless!
At least when I spoke to Am.Bio they were genuinely interested in the performance of their products and I spoke to an engineer who knew how their product was supposed to work.
Unfortunately, I fully doubt that Woodstream will continue R&D to enhance and perfect this product which is too bad because they REALLY WORK.
Fortunately, any patents on this will run out in a couple more years and some other more diligent company such as Coleman might produce their own vastly improved unit. Let’s hope so!!

  • Rich Tehrani
    July 29, 2007 at 4:54 pm

It is truly staggering that this product wasn’t more successful as when it works, it gets so many testimonials. It seems the company should have spent more time perfecting some of these mechanical issues before they shipped. Had they done so, they would still be in business.
One other idea would have been to partner with a national oil change company who could perform tune-ups on these units.
Like ScienceOfThePS3 says… Let’s hope another company comes out with a more reliable product. For the record, my magnet still works after a number of years. I hope i dont have to go through the hell many of you have gone through.

I had very similar problems to other posters. My Liberty worked just fine for the first 2 seasons. Then, it started to give me the flashing light error indicating low gas flow. My tank was full, had been properly purged, and was not a replacement tank. I disassembled and assembled the unit three times to no avail. I ordered several threaded CO2 cartridges(6 specifically) and used them all, but I still could not get the unit to run more than 15-30 minutes. I finally went to Mosquito Control Technology website and ordered a 25 pack of unthreaded cartridges with an adapter. I still didn’t think that this was enough to get the unit running, so in desperation. I also ordered a replacement regulator. The regulator I received did not have a burr adapter for the hose. So I bought one from a local hardware store; I also bought a small hose clamp. I ended up cutting the hose to the old regulator and attaching the new one via the replacement burr connector and hose clamp. I turned the unit back on and it has been running for approximately 8 hours. I had heard that the regulators tended to go bad, and I think this was my problem. Obviously, this remedy should be tried outside of warranty. I will try to post an update regarding the status of this unit. BTW the address for MCT is : http://ecommerce.accessnow.com/~mosquitomagnetrepair/store/
    Best of luck to all

I had all of the “empty tank” problems with my Mosquito Magnet that have been mentioned by others. I inadvertently was able to fix the problem when I was having problems with my Bayou Classic Turkey Fryer. It wouldn’t light, and LP was just trickling out.
I called their customer service, and was told that MANY REGULATORS on LP tanks have a defective sensor, and when you turn on a new tank of gas, it “overloads” the regulator, and it essentially shuts down.
I was told to do the following. 1. Open a new tank ONLY 1/3 OF A TURN. Start the unit, and within 10 minutes the Mosquito Magnet will “go green” at which point I then open the valve fully.
Crazy as it sounds, since that simple change two years ago, I’ve never had another problem.

I mailed my Pro to MosquitoMagnetRepair.com. When all is said and done, it will cost me about $300 to do the work necessary to repair the same problem that you have. They convinced me that the Pro is still the best version of any magnet new or old and that it would be worth the repair. I sent in early July and have not yet got it back. They say 25 to 30 days.

  • Neil from Pennsylvania

Well, bad news… sort of. The new regulator seemed to improve the duration of a “working” Liberty, however, as I stated in my previous post, it ran for at least 8 hours. I let the unit run overnight and it gave me the “flashing green” empty tank warning lights again.
I did notice something curious however. While disconnecting the regulator from the tank, I used the red “reset” tool which came with the MM to reset the regulator. When I shook the regulator, I heard a rattling noise (I belive this is a brass ball bearing which probably is the overflow prevention mechanism referred to by Lavern). I have made several other attempts at getting the unit to work, but am still getting the error. I do notice that when I disconnect the regulator, there is no rattling noise until I reset it.
I think I will try Lavern’s solution for now.
I will try to keep you posted.

This is what worked for me!!
I have had the Defender mosquito trap for 2 years without any problems until a couple of days ago when I got the trouble code (rapid flashing light). I have used the quick clear cartrages as instructed ever since I’ve had the trap. I called tech support and they instructed me to use the reset tool and used 3 quick clears back to back (which I did) with no success.
I done a little home work on the internet about propane tanks, the OPD valve, and how tanks are filled at propane refilling stations and found that its common practice to fill the tank until it shuts off by the OPD valve and NOT by manually shutting it off by control on the big tank. And because there is so much pressure going in sometimes it can jam the OPD valve shut.
So what I did to solve this was to turn off the trap, let it shut down, close the tank valve, disconnect the regulator from the tank, and turn the propane tank upside down and shake it a little. Turn it right side up connect everything back and its working fine now.
The way these OPD valves work is there is a float inside the tank thats connected to a valve so when the liquid propane gets to a certain level towards the top it automaticly closes the valve as a safty divice ONLY and not as a refilling device. Turning the tank upside down puts the float towards the bottom opening the OPD valve again.
I am not a propane tech I just found something that worked for me so you can do this at your own risk.
    Hope this helps

I had similar issues as others with my MM this past summer. Based on what I read on the web and what I found out by taking my MM apart, I tried to piece together some tips on wiki answers at
    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_fix_a_mosquito_magnet
In my case, I needed to dismantle the unit and soak the sprayer in mineral spirits to get my unit to work. Seems that this piece is a little sensitive and can get clogged with impurities from the LP tanks.
When the unit works, I’m very happy with it. Am totally unhappy with the lousy customer support from the company, though.

I sent my mosquito magnet libery model to mosquito control technology, based on Rich Tehrani’s report. It was having gas flow issues similar to the previous posts. I got it diagnosed and fixed for under $200. Apparently they have made changes since then because my machine only took 20 days +/- a couple for shipping. But hey, just thought I would share my story. Hope it helps.

I have or should I say have had a Defender for a couple years now. I am now on my third head replacment and the unit is doing the same thing agin…now the factory is telling me to take a hike. Based on the amount of money I spent on this unit and all the problems I have experienced I do not recommend this product. The unit workes ok for a couple tank fulls of LP and then won’t re-start…I have run over $20.00 of CO2 through my unit with no luck. I’m making a sea anchor of unit tonight off my dock. The factory claims they don’t have a service agency in Flordia…hello…mosquito capital of the world. Not only fresh water, but we have salt water mosquitos as well. Keep your money and by a yard fogger.

I have a Defender that worked well for three years, then wouldn’t start at year four. Shot some CO2 through it which made absolutely no difference. Installed a new nozzle, tested & cleaned the burner according to the excellent instructions at http://gra.midco.net/jmanley/ and still no luck.
Finally I did a regulator test. To do this, unscrew the propane tube from the solenoid block. Apply the reset tool if you have one for good measure. Then attach the regulator to a full tank (OUTDOORS PLEASE), and slowly open the tank valve. A steady soft hiss and a pungent odor means the reg is ok. But if you hear nothing, or it it sounds like a tiny stuffed up nose, the reg is bad! Mine made no sound, it was totally plugged.
The reg on the Defender is a Marshall Controls Model 150, which is used on many a gas BBQ… Char Broil Replacement Hose and Regulator part # 83559 uses the exact same regulator as the Defender. Lowe’s sells it for 20 bucks. The hose & fitting are different, so I attached the old hose to the new regulator with a small hose clamp. Works like a charm.
    Some other thoughts:
    1) As long as the controller board is working and the catalytic converter is sound, the Defender is a VERY SIMPLE device and can be serviced with off the shelf parts.
    2) There is no need to use CO2 to blow out the unit. There are no parts in the MM that could be harmed by air in place of CO2. (Think about it – the thing is full of air all time anyway) Compressed air works just as well – which is to say, it works okay for certain problems. But if your MM is really dirty, crack it open and replace the nozzle for $5.00.
    3) If you’re about to take an aluminum bat to your MM (I was THIS CLOSE) please don’t do it. There are only a few main parts that will go bad and by process of elimination you can fix it.

Has anyone had problems with the battery packs on the Liberty Plus? Our’s had been working fine for about 5 weeks this season when all of a sudden the battery pack melted. The fumes were incredible and because of the heat, the battery pack fused to the housing. The unit appears ruined.
    Thank you.

    Hi guys and girls
I was having a lot of trouble with my Defender unit it would not stay running. The fan would come on and would go through the sequanceing and come up rapped flashing and shut down. After a lot of bunk from the service dept. I took matters into my own hands and took the unit apart. I tested the ignighter and it got red hot so that was okay I then testad the thermocouple and the contenuity droped when it was heated so that was okay I tested the gas valve by applying 12v and I could here it snap open so that was okay so I split the combustion unit apart and cleaned the carbon out of it and put it back together. The thing still didn’t work. I decided it had to be the regulator so I took it off the unit and connected it to the propane tank and opened the tank and the gas wasent coming through open line so I found my problem. I went to Canadin Tire and bought the regulater and hose for 20 dollars and it works like the day I bought it. If any one ot there needs help you can contact me at [email protected]

For all you people who have relaced gas tanks, regulators and have used numerouse cartridges of CO2 to no avail, Here’s how to get your MM up and running again, it worked for me just fine. The problem is they do get clogged up with carbon residue with no good way of removing the carbon. The CO2 has to pass through such a small orifice that it really can’t get the job done. I wasn’t a religious CO2 user so I’m a prime example. Here we go. Take the top of the outer case off (4) screws. Locate the igniter (it’s got a ceramic housing and is mounted on the side of burn chamber near the circuit board. Carefully remove the igniter (1 screw & you must reuse the gasket) and completely blow out the inside of the burn chamber with compressed air. Don’t damage the honeycomb plates inside(which is what is clogged) Reassemble and start it up. THIS WORKS!!!

I have a Liberty Plus model that works well …..when it can stay on. The unit will stay on in “Green” mode from anywhere from one to two days….then it changes in a “Red/Orange” flashing mode. I purchased a new battery and allowed it to charge for several days. It started again but shut back off to “Red/Orange” after a few days. If I charge it again, it will return operational for only a day or so. I enjoy the product but at this rate it spends more time charging than doing its job. Anyone have a clue?

Like SO many other people, I was having the dreaded “insufficient propane flow” problem. I spent scads of money on those stupid CO2 cartridges — I’ve found they never work. However, I discovered a cheap and relatively easy fix to the problem. If you take the cover off the machine, you’ll see the very small “piping” that the propane flows through. If you unscrew the nuts on either end of the pipe, you can take it out — then simply blow through it until you feel a nice flow of air coming out the other end, screw it back in and your propane flow will be restored.
I’ll never buy another CO2 cartridge again.

John C.: Sounds like something related to the thermoelectric module is bad. The unit is not generating enough electricity so it’s running strictly off the battery. The battery runs down in a few days and the unit then shuts off.

    Fixed.
I had 2 mosquitos liberty plus
    1) slow led red code. Took the cover out disassembled all the gas line and the security valve , cleaned with compressed air. Now are running smoothly.
    2) fast red/yellow code
Whit the fear of a broken thermocouple I
took the cover out and luckily I discovered a broken cable.
(the one that come form the thermocouple”.
Anyway if someone need a thermocouple as replacemnt part you can find some on ebay for cheap (look for peltier cell).
    3) slow led red code (reprise) I noticed that the spark didn’t fire, took the circuit out and I was unable to find spare electrical components for replacements, so I ended using a normal igniter for gas kitchen in place of the original one.
Sorry for my bad English I hope even all my grammar error you’ll be able to understand how easy is to fix this machine the time you know how it s works.
    Best regards.

    Greetings all,
I’ve found something interesting regarding my MM Liberty. It seems to work when the ambient temperature is lower. It will work overnight, but when the midday sun reaches it, it shuts off and gives me the “low flow” flashing light. This will also happen when it is in the shade when the ambient temperature is higher than 80-85 degrees (this was happening the latter portion of last year). It seems that there must be an overheat sensor to prevent the MM from, well, overheating. I did not have this problem when I first purchased the unit, about 4-5 years ago. Any help would be appreciated. (I am now considering sending the unit away to be fixed). Thank you.

I bought a Mosquito Magnet Pro, back in 2003. I have had problems throughout the years with many of the above, but somehow seemed to get buy with small repairs, etc. Now I have opened my machine up and both my fans are finished. Is there anywhere I can get replacement fans?? I live in northern Ontario and don’t have access to many stores. Can anyone suggest someplace? Thanks.

    Good information here.
Question: I have a new MM Defender model, and started up successfully last night. Given the guideline/instructions say you’ll see results (catching mosquitos) within 7+ days, and full effectiveness at 4-6 weeks, AND given the bugs currently are not around, BUT they probably will be (with Summer heat on the horizon) in short order – AND considering this might be a stupid question – should I run the unit from now, or wait until I start getting bitten? I have seen the odd mosquito in the last couple days – but we will be swarming with them soon. (The mosquitos are so big around here in Winnipeg, Canada, they screw ducks.)

Question:I have a 4 year old Liberty Plus which worked well until fall of last year. Since last fall the magnet would only run for 12-72 hours regardless of ambient outside temperature. then it would stop and flash red LED. I have tried clearing the propane using many cartridges and have used full propane tanks (purged) and have not been able to get it to run longer. Does anyone have any suggestions or repair shop options that they would reccommend? I live in Massachusetts in a very wooded area.

I have a Liberty that worked for about 2 years. 1st year, caught many little buggers. 2nd year, about 5. Now, the “out of gas” thing. Having spent days switching cylinders, C02 cartridges, resetting gas, etc. it still does not work. Several calls to whatever they call themselves was pleasant but bottom line: send it in! Nearest repair center is over 1000 miles. I asked if they would send a repair manual, no! In fact, I got the response, “You can’t work on it yourself because it is proprietory (sp?) technology”. Wanna bet? There is no excuse for a product to be this poorly supported.

THEY are shiiteheads. AGREED! I am not a professional mechanic, and with minimal tools I got my pro version cleaned out. You just need to look at what comes off next and put it in order so it is easy to re-assemble. Once you get in, all you need to do is knock the carbon build-up off the exhaust area.
Good luck, don’t let them screw you!

I have had many of same stories with 2 Liberty Plus models over the years I’d had them. One of them started this season just fine but other one won’t hold the charge when I charge battery. I tried twice. Should I try to replace battery? If so, how do I go about that when I am in Ontario? I have returned my original MMs several times over. I don’t actually remember whether this is my 2nd/3rd or whatever! I am trying to decide whether to ‘write off’ this one. Am I throwing good money after bad?

I have 3 MM Pro C, one works fine, one starts up right away and after 20 plus minutes shuts down. The 3rd one will fire up for 2 to 3 seconds and then shuts down and will not fire up until it cools down. I have used about a dozen of the Co2’s trying to clean out the units. I exchanged one two years ago, but $750 every few years is not what I want to do. Do you have any good advise on what I could do other than do a exchange.

I have the purchased two mosquito magnet. One I purchased when the unit first came out. It was bulky and required sometime to start it. That pro unit worked for one year. After talking to customer service I got the run around; however since it worked great the first year, I purchased the newer model.
The newer model worked great for one year and ever since then it has not worked. The mosquito magnet is a good excuse for wasting propane when the unit is working. If some say to replace it in differnent part of the yard, well that has been done and I am running out of yard space to place it to where it will work.
For shits and giggles I even tried lurex 3 in New England, and that really didn’t work. I had recommened this unit to two of my neighbors and theirs do not work aswell.
If you are looking for someone who will recommend these units, I suggest you not ask someon that has anything to gain, i.e. salespeople.

I have a brand new Defender and I can’t get it to work. Even went out and bought a brand new gas bottle. The fan starts, red light flashing, fan goes quiet, then the rapid red problem-light comes on. And the machine stops.
I took it back to the shop. Two and a half hours drive each way. They had “never” had any problems like this. Even his old mum had managed to start the Defender… So I got another brand new machine. Drove back. Did the whole procedure carefully… and it doesn’t work!
So it must be something I’m doing wrong. Even though I’m doing everything according to the instructions. Clearly, there can’t be any build-up of anything.
Not being a technical person, I shy away from unscrewing anything. So I’m hoping there is a “magic step” in the start-up procedure, something I’m doing wrong????? Do things have to be done in a particular order? How careful should I be when I turn on the gas? Would it help if I connected the gas to the grill first, and burnt off whatever might be in top of the tank?
I used one compressed air ‘bullet’ on the first Defender, to no avail. Should I use several, even though the machine is brand new?

    Lynn,
I’m in a similar position – except I have 2 pro models with fan problems! When the suckers work they are terrific but right now I have 2 very expensive pieces of junk. It really pisses me off that the model has been abandoned and the company hasn’t had the courtesy to make the specs available to (formerly) loyal customers. If you hear anything / find a replacement. Please let me know thanks.

I also have a Pro with the same fan problem. A $1300 investment down the drain. I’ve since purchased a Nosquito machine from Home Depot that supposedly covers an acre. It was under $300, which would be about the cost to send out a Pro to get assessed and fixed. I’ve been told if you have the tools, check whether the fan is shot or if it is not getting power.

My startup problems turned out to be a defective overload sensor in the LP connector. What works for me is when you attach the tank, turn the handle ONLY 1/3 of a turn open. Then hit start on the unit. After the blinking yellow light finally goes solid, then green after about 10 minutes, then turn the tank fully on. Hope this works for you.

Solution: Rather than CO2 I use a compressed air tank (fill at service station or from air compressor). After the pressure has dropped 5 psi from 90 psi to 85, or from 40 to 35 one of my MM runs fine, although it needs frequent restarting. I keep the tank covered near my MM.
Question: My other MM shows no lights and appears dead in the water. Any suggestions as to how to start my repair? I am heartened by succesful reports of disassembly and self repair. To save time, give me a hint where to start. Thanks!

    >Question: My other MM shows no lights and appears dead in the water.
When something is totally dead the first thing to do is check the power supply. Either the supply is dead or the power distribution is bad.

    I have a liberty.(not the plus)
It worked GREAT for 2 seasons then 1/2 way through the 3rd season it died.
It had the lights flashing that translated to ignitor problem.
I ripped it apart and bought a new one on Ebay.

I too had the frustration of the propane tank fuel error codes on the Liberty model. The trick with the 1/3 turn open initially on the propane tank, until it goes solid green worked for me. Thanks to the folks that posted that tip.

I have a liberty plus. It lasted one season. Last year after recharging the battery, the fan would not power up. I immediately ordered another battery and charged that it. Again, it would not start. I ended up getting frustrated and skipped the whole season. This year I immediately replaced the power adapter. Nothing still. What’s next to replace the circuit board? These things are horrible. A friend of mine asked me yesterday if he should by one. I told him to simply google ‘Mosquito Magnet problems’, and he’ll see how many dissatisfied customers there are out there with products lasting only 1 season after spending $500. I the problem because it was produced by ‘American’ Biophysics? If it was made outside of this country, would we still be having the same issues? Seems like everything I buy that is American is a piece of garbarge. We sure lost or sense of pride in this country in the products we produce.

I have two defenders that did not work. Somebody gave me the second one. Out of the two I got one working as it was a leaky gas regulator. The second one needs a new brass gas regulator. The unit will light off and run for 20 minutes then shut down. I was able to swap out the brass gas valve and the second unit ran all night.
It appears that MM has all the peter paul gas valves tied up and I cannot find anyone to sell me one. They say I must send the unit in to a certified repair center, which is 300 miles away. Can anyone help me source a peter paul brass gas valve for a defender unit?

MY LIBERTY RAN ALL SEASON STARTING IN MAY AND JUST 5 DAYS AGO RAN OUT OF FUEL. AFTER RUNNING A CO2 CARTRIDGE AND A GOOD CLEANING WITH SHOP VAC THE UNIT WOULD NOT START. I DID ALL THE RESETS AND RAN 4 MORE CO2 CARTRIDGES THROUGH WITH NO LUCK. AS A LAST RESORT I FIRED UP MY COMPRESSOR AND RAN 80 PSI THROUGH THE CO2 CONNECTION AND THEN BLEW THE WHOLE MACHINE OUT AT 100 PSI. A LOT OF MOTHS AND MOSQUITOS THAT HAD AVOIDED THE TRAP CAME FLYING OUT OF EVERY OPENING. THE MACHINE THEN STARTED AND HAS BEEN RUNNING SINCE.

I let mosquitocontroltechnology take my machine. They received it on July 3, 2007 and did not get around to attempt to fix it until October, 2007, when the mosquitoes are already gone. They charged my $149 and I had to fight with them and Amex to get my money and machine back. They were going to charge an additional $200 to actually fix it when the season was over. The repair warranty would be well over by the time I actually would use it again. Bad news. Avoid them!

I am trying to get the liberty plus working for my mother-in-law. It has never been used. I get about 15 mins into the start-up procedure, and the machine goes quiet and the battery out light indication comes on.
I think what is happening is that the gas is lighting, but the thermoelectric module is not starting up and taking over when it should. Is it possible to remove this module and run it off a mains transformer like a standard liberty model?

It may be possible to run the unit without modification by using a 5vdc power supply in place of the battery.

I got “sucked in” and bought a Mosquito Magnet in the spring of 2007. Te thing worked like a champ for the first tank of gas, but never worked again.
I got a lot of run-round from the tech support people before a google search educated me to all the problems. then I returned the unit for $$.
This spring I bought a Skeeter Vac, and the thing rocks! Ran it from March until into November of 2008 and it always lights up with not fuss. I have 3 different propane tanks and it likes them all.
So forget all the fables about “purging air from the tank” or needing service or blowing the thing out with air – what’s with them anyway? We’re blowing pressurized propane through the unit, why do we need to blow air or CO2 through?
Bottom line: Some blood-sucking investor funded the Mosquito Magnet product and is determined to sell enough of the POS product to get a decent return. Don’t get suced in.

To respond to Tom about blood-sucking investors…the tech was developed and used exclusively by the United States Marines on bases throughout the United States. Still is. But I know what you mean about the run-around with the company, I don’t think the people on the call lines know anything about mosquito magnets other than what they read on computer screens. The best thing to do is contact http://www.themosquitostore.com, those guys know everything there is to know and have a really fast turn-around. I live in South Carolina (they are in Rhode Island) and got mine back within a week of sending it out. Well worth the money.
I had a Skeeter Vac and the thing didn’t do anything but sit there in my back yard and not drive away mosquitos, thats what drove me to get a Magnet.

Mike I would consider yourselves one of the lucky ones. Against the advise of other posters I sent my machine to themosquitostore.com and wow, am I sorry. I eventually told them to ship it back (which they made me pay for) because they wanted to charge me almost what the cost of a new Defender would be! Like I said I wish I had your luck. I’m filing a complain with the better business bureau to get my money back.

@ Bill – I am another one of the lucky ones that had a great experience with themosquitostore.com. They have an excellent website with alot of information (including pricing!!), and are the only people on the east coast that have a flat rate for repair. I have 4 defenders for my property in Gainesville (FL) which I have had swapped out by the guys in Rhode Island over the last 2 years. The turnaround/shipping time was what I would expect considering the size/weight of the boxes they come in. Worth 100 bucks to keep the mosquitos away. 🙂 -Todd

    Bill…
We don’t have a customer in Colorodo named Bill, especially a customer that we had an issue like this with. Nor have we ever been contacted by the BBB. It is one thing to write a negative testimonial out of a truthful experience. If this had happened we would have been more than happy to settle the situation in a manner that suits the customer (i.e. you). Our pricing is clearly listed on our website, ebay store, and again provided over the phone. We never would ask for more than the listed price in which the customer agrees to pay at the point of purchase. We have literally thousands of customers each year and a very low dissatisfaction rate and we are among the best repair warranty providers in the nation. Please call us if there is any problem.
Otherwise, please refrain from slandering our business to indirectly promote your own business, which I believe is the situation here.

My “out of gas” problems were solved a few years ago, when I talked to Bayou Classic about my Turkey Fryer which wouldn’t start properly. Their serviceman advised me that the problem is usually a defective regulator in your LP tank, which erroniously detects an overflow of gas, and automatically shuts down.
To fix the problem, Connect the newly filled tank, OPEN THE TANK ONLY 1/3 OF A TURN, hit the “on” button, and after about 5 minutes when the light turns green, turn the tank fully open.

I live on the Suwannee River in North Florida and have used both Mosquito Magnets and Skeeter-Vacs. It’s a good news bad news deal. Both are very effective at catching and controling mosquitos if they are placed correctly and run from the beginning of the season. They are not an immediate solution. The Mosquito Magnet catches much more mosquitos but will have to be sent in for maintenance every year at a cost of about $150. The Skeeter-Vac catches less but I’ve had one run running for 2 years+ with no problems. A Skeeter-Vac plus is their “tac strip” is extremely effective on yellow (deer) flies. You can catch yellow flies with the Mosquito Magnet by hanging one of those sticky fly strips from it.

I have a Liberty Plus and it starts up and stays orange, it will not go past the start up stage. It will stay orange as long as I leave it on (15 min – 1 hr). I have surpassed all the other flashing, this (I hope) is my last hurdle. It was purchased in 2006, but has never been used. I have opened it up, cleanned it out, put 11 CO2 cartridges into it, changed tanks and stood on my head. Has anyone had this problem? Any hints?

    Dear Jamie,
Here’s what worked for me. I couldn’t get my Cajun Cooker to light properly, so I called their customer service. They told my that many if not most LP tanks have defective regulators, which will incorrectly sense an overload of gas, and will not turn fully on. He said on startup, only open the valve on the tank 1/3 of a turn. Then light it. When I did, the unit worked fine. I now do the same thing with my Liberty units. On startup, only open 1/3 of a turn, and when the unit turns green in about 10-15 minutes, turn the tank fully open. Hope this works for you.

    I’ve got the Defender.
I just took it out of the garage for the summer and hooked it up and I’ve got nothing. It would appear that the board is dead. I checked voltage at the plug and there’s 12V. I also checked it on the circuit board directly where the power comes into the unit and onto the board and there is power there of about 12V.
What else should I check? Is there a wire diagram for this thing?
Where would I get a new board if there is something wrong?
How do I test individual parts on the board?
What inputs are needed before it will allow even the power switch to turn on and the fan to run?
    Thanks,

I had problems with mosquitocontroltechnology.com. They got my Pro model last June. Then they said they were backlogged. I kept contacting them. They finally got back to me the following October saying that they would now fix it. Basically I missed the entire summer when I needed it. They offered no goodwill towards their gross mishandling of getting my machine fixed in the promised timely manner. They even refused to reimburse the initial $149 payment when I told them to forget about it. I needed Amex to dispute the charge.

I have a Liberty Pro Plus purchased new last year. It has developed a gas leak on on the collar of the hose assembly. wish I had good news for you, but mine is still taking up room in my garage – with high hopes that one day I will have the energy to fix it, or maybe sell it to someone who has more ambition to kill mosquitos than I do. Last year I tried the Nosquito, but returned it to Home Depot after almost two months of not catching anything. Bug spray is looking good…

I have two aces of land in North East Florida near wetlands and in mosquito heaven. I was given a mosquito magnet in 2000. It was one of the “delux” models with all the bells and whistles. It really caught a lot of mosquitos, so I was enthused. So I aquired two more magnets. Liberty defenders. Smaller and thank goodness not as expensive. One of them stopped running right after the first tank. I went through the whole: “buy the CO2, purge the line, get a new tank…re-set the tank ect…” Finally I sent it back and recieved a “refurbished one”. It ran for less than 6 months or so. Within two years all of the magnets quit working. In 2004 after a year of calling tech support and trying everything, I finally threw all of them away. The company had stopped the program of offering to send me a refurbished one, they were out of warrenty anyway, and they really were just cluttering up the garage. Now for the really stupid part..It’s 2009. The rains were heavier than usual and I’ve never seen the mosquitos so bad. I guess time not only heals all wounds, but it makes you forget stuff too, so last month I bought another mosquito magnet, liberty model-It ran great on the first tank. I also received the little tank re-set tool with it so I thought maybe the company had worked out the bugs, so to speak…Well, I just tried to change the tank last week. It won’t start back up. Lights flashing etc. I’ve reset the tank, used at least two CO2 cartridges, changed out the full tank for another full tank..nada. I can’t tell you how pissed off I am, standing in the yard in 100 degree weather, covered with mosquitoes, wresteling with this stupid machine.
I’ve only had the thing for 21 days or so. I kept my reciept and I’m going to see if Home Depot will take it back. I know, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The real shame is the thing really works when it works…unfortunatly it doesn’t work very often.

I agree. There is obviously a very major flaw with these things that the company is well aware of. I find it insulting that there are answers from the company implying that we (some consumers) just don’t know how to keep these things running. If I had to hot wire my car everyday because I had a faulty starter, I don’t think there would be a cadree of technicians telling me that I had to stand on my head and blow while I held the wires together. When you spend 100s (in some cases 1000s) of dollars for something:
    1. you should not have to find out AFTERWARDS that you need to spend 150.00 a year to keep it running (which even then it may not).
    2. you should not have to be an electrician (or magician) to keep it running properly.
Home depot took my machine back by the way…Anyone have a recommendation about the skeetervac? Anyone know a consumer advocate lawyer?

For a red bliking “no gas” fault. You may want to take your mm apart as stated above and check the brass tip where the propane enters the “chamber”. I did so yesterday, mine had some gunk built up on it. I cleaned it with alcohol and blew out the metal “chamber” with an air compressor blow gun, put it all back together, said a prayer and it working fine for now. Good luck.

This worked great! My MM would not light, tried 3 co2’s and nothing. Tried this and started right up.

    June 25, 2009 at 10:58 am

I brought my MM from the U.S. to Japan where I currently live in an area where the mosquitos are ferocious. I adapted my MM to LP gas here same as I did with my gas BBQ (which works great by the way), but I am having problems getting the dang MM started and will try several things I’ve read on this blog. I do have a few questions though. Will compressed air be as effective as the CO2 cartridges? I’m having a hard time finding the CO2 adapter here in Japan that fits the shrader valve but I do have an air compressor. However, I understand that the CO2 cartridges have close to 900 PSI in them and I’m afraid my air compressor at 110 PSI just won’t have enough ummph to remove any carbon blockage.
Also, how is that gas reset tool supposed to work? You screw it onto the regulator side and then unscrew it. To me, that’s just hocus pocus and serves absolutly no purpose. What are those guys at MM smoking?
One last question, does anyone know which attractant works best in Japan? I have both Octenal and Lurex3.

  • Ash
    June 25, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Don’t use the gas reset tool…. Just screw on the plastic gas fitting to the gas tank, then unscrew it. You should here a hiss. Repeat until no hiss and all oxygen should be gone and you can turn on the gas and start it up. Good luck

I have a Liberty that has been giving me the “no gas” fault for years. I went through all the headaches listed above in spades. I finally had it professionally opened up and cleaned last year and it ran great for the rest of the season. I got the “no gas” fault on the second tank this season. It was covered with little black ants so I thought they might have something to do with it. I figured I would either open it up myself for nothing or throw it in the trash for nothing. I wasn’t going to invest another cent in this.
I got it open easily and blew/vacuumed out all the ants (millions) and as I did so I realized this machine is not very complicated under the hood. I disconnected the gas line and blew through it. I also got the shop vac. right onto the combustion chamber for a couple seconds. I reassembled the MM, used the gas reset on the tank about 5 times until there was no hiss (thanks for that tip), and fired her up. She’s been running for 4+ days without a hitch. I’m not sure which method did the trick, but they were all easy and free.
From now on I’m not going to waste my time nor money with the quick clears. I’ll try the repeated gas reset and if that doesn’t work, I’ll open it up and clear out the lines (which took about the same amount of time I spent with the CO2 cartridges).
Thanks everyone for contributing to the blog. It was super helpful. I hope my experience helps someone else out.

    Hello Jerry,
I have the mosquito magnet. The fan keeps turning off, so i bought the compressed air cartridges and injected it through the valve. I put on the tank and the fan ran for about 10 minutes then quit. Then I swapped tanks, fan ran for 10 minutes and quit. I am so pissed off I am considering using a little blow from my compressor to clean the lines. I cleaned the machine before I put it away last year and it worked fine, this year nothing… The switch where you turn it on has a red flashing light, even from first turning it on…..What do I do. Help me out Goose!

I have a 5-year old Liberty unit and was having starting problems. Flushed it out with CO2 cartridges and just barely opened the propane valve (1/8 of a turn) and started the unit which fired and turned green. Then opened the valve the rest of the way. When I would open the valve 1/4 turn and start the unit, you could here it pop when it tried to fire (too much gas). Also, buy your CO2 cartridges online from a distibutor for much less, following is a link to one such distributor’s:

    July 15, 2009 at 10:30 am

I also have a Liberty MM. Got the same old error code that indicates “no gas fault” just like everybody else here. I was determined to fix this beast so here is my 2 cents as to what I did to get this thing going. The unit is definitly getting gas because I removed the thermistor and glow plug from its mounting holes and safely moved them away and out of mischeif. I then ran the unit through it’s start up procedure. After the 3 miniute purging sequence the glow plug starts glowing (turns orange hot!) and shortly after that I can smell gas coming out of the thermistor and glow plug holes. I then tested the thermister by un-soldering one of the wires from the circuit board. Then I connected my Ohm meter across the 2 wires of the thermistor. I then took a BIC lighter and heated up the thermistor end. The resistance value was very high (1 megohm or so) in the begining (cold), but began to decrease in resistance when heating it up with the BIC lighter. The reading got to around 10k ohm and so I considered the thermistor OK.
So now I ask myself, why is this thing not working? There is gas, there is spark, WHY NOT? It simply is not igniting the gas. What is missing? Oxygen!!! You got to have oxygen for it to ignite, right? I then looked at the system trying to figure out where the air mixture comes in. The only place I could see where air gets in is around the brass orfice assembly. There is a set screw that holds the brass orfice assembly in place. What I did was moved the brass fitting out away from the casting of the heat exchanger about 1/4 inch. Reset the set screw and re-installed the glow plug and thermistor. Pressed the On button and within 4 minutes the heat exchanger I noticed was getting warm. Eventually the Green LED light came on and has worked for about 2 weeks now. What I think was going on here is that there was not enough Air getting in around the orfice assembly. So by moving it back the 1/4 inch I believe the Air mixture was enough to enable it to ignite like it should.
I would be interested in knowing if anyone else out there with the ‘no gas fault’ would try what I did and post some feed back. Thanks.
    Bob

Hey bvoguy, I believe your right that a lot of the Liberty problems are caused by too sensitive gas/oxygen mix. I’m still troubleshooting mine and think I have an O2 problem too. When I removed the nozzle and tested it outside the burner housing, it worked just fine with about a 2 inch flame. I also checked my igniter and it gets red-hot, so the problem has to be lack of air.
You indicated that you pulled the nozzle about 1/4 inch out to allow more airflow. I tried that with no luck. However, on my unit there is sealant around the nozzle and therefore the airflow wouldn’t really improve as the only air getting in is the two holes in the burner housing (yes I checked and they are clear). Anyway, can you tell me if there was sealant around the nozzle in your unit? I believe mine has been repaired once before and maybe sealant was installed where it shouldn’t have been.

On July 17 2009, I purchased a Mosquito magnet Independence Model for $559 plus $40 tax fro Home Depot in Westerly RI. I also purchased two new tanks at $32 each and xtra bait and co2 cartridges. The unit started up and worked well for 4 days and went off overnight on the 5gth day for no reason. After numerous tries during which the led stayed on green and would not go to orange for warmup, I finally got it started. It worked for 4 days on the second attempt, shut down for no reason and the led remained on green even on a cold startup. I then called support and spoke to a female who didn’t seem to know that there was an Independence Model and after a confusing time trying to explain my problem, she told me to remove the battery pack and keep it out for an hour at least and then start over following the directions for a cold start. This did nothing to help and I again called customer support and after another usless conversation, I was e mailed a UPS pre paid label and told to pack the head in a box and send it bak for repairs. Turn around time a week to 10 days. For $559, I took the whole thing back in it’s box which I hadsaved for winter storage to the Westery, RI Home Depot. They were terrific and in an even exchange, gave me a brand new Independence Model. I brought it home, set it up and it worked for three days before it shut down during a rain storm and when I tried to re-start, the lde come on in orange for warmup and ran in orange for over an hour and shut down. I tried my two tank after using the CO2 to blow out the lines and even borrowed a neighbors tank as a final check. It would not work. I did not bother to call customer support and instead packed the unit up and returned it to Home Depot and got a full refund.
DON’T BUY ONE OF THESE OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!! JUNK PRODUCT. POOR QUALITY CONTROL. VERY INCOMPETENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!! They didn’t even answer an e mail I sent on their WEB sight to make known my feelings despite saying they would respond in two business days. BEWARE!!

I bought the mosquito Magnet Defender in Aug 06. I used it for two months in 06. Used it fine in 07. Went to start it up in 08. No go. Had to have it serviced by L & T Worldwide in Balt, MD. $135 later it worked for a season and a half, just like when it was new. As of today, the piece of shiz does not work again. Must be built in China. Any idea on how well the Mega-Catch works?

Here’s how I fixed my insufficient gas flow on my liberty plus, which had been running trouble free for 3 years. The gas reset tool, which usually fixed the problem wasn’t working this time. I disonnected the propane, removed the battery and removed the 4 bolts and 6 screws that held the two body parts together. I then removed the propane line from the unit. I connected the line to my propane tank and slowly turned it on. I noticed that gas was running, but very slowly. I put my finger over the end of the tube a few times and heard a click in the regulator. Gas was then flowly much faster. I put everything back together again, skipping the gas reset tool and the unit is now working perfectly again.

I have to disagree. I found their service to be very helpful and they got my machine fixed and back to me in about 25 days. I would however recommend that you send it to them on the off season so you can have it up and running when the mosquitos come back (and they usually have specials going on too). My machines worked great ever since. Hope this helps…

    Mary,
If you had a problem with a unit of ours that we repaired then please contact us as we are always more than willing to work with customers to make sure that not only are their units repaired, but also stay running. Part of the reason we are as successful as we are, aside from the fact that we always have the guaranteed lowest price, is because we are always willing to work with customers in the event a unit fails in the field in doing things such as honoring expired warranties, pro rating parts, or we have even gone as far as to swap repaired or refurbished units for completely brand new units at an extremely reduced cost to ensure customer satisfaction. Some shops do not help the customer after a repaired unit fails, which is an unfortunate fact of life about any repair industry. Sometimes the product fails and it needs a rerepair. What matters is the level of service the shop is willing to offer to its customer.
You are correct, Brian should do his own research, as should any smart consumer. However, we reserve the right to emphasize our fairness and reliability in customer service. Our first step with every single customer is to troubleshoot their fault magnet to make sure that the problem is not something small that can be fixed in by the customer themself, usually this is the case and there is no cost to the customer. It makes far more sense to us as a repair shop and an accessories dealer, to make sure that customers continuously have units running to ensure the sale of a complementary good. It makes no economic sense for us to not do whatever we can to make sure every last one of our customers is satisfied by the product they purchased. I am not simply trying to plug my shop, I truly take the level of my work, as an employee, to heart. If you have any concern about our service from previous experience, I urge you to contact me. It is worth noting that I have urged this to customers in the past on this message board, but yet not one has ever responded to my call. I firmly hold that this directly correlates with the level of slander from competition on the internet, something that is inconceivable to me in this economy.
    Best Regards,
    Zach Silvia

I have a MM Defender that’s having the same problem but is still under factory warranty, so attempting my own repair could void the warranty. It worked fine for the first 6 months, then one day couldn’t restart.
I called Mosquito Magnet support (excellent customer service) and made arrangements to ship it off for repair. I got it back in 3 days and it restarted immediately and worked until the propane ran out. They replaced the igniter and thermister.
One month later, again it refused to restart, so I called MM support again, so it’s off to the repair shop again for a second time in one month. I waited almost 2 weeks to get it back. It came back today. This time they replaced the PCB. It absolutely refused to restart. I went to Uhaul and bought a new propane tank, had it filled an purged there but it still would not restart.
It looks like I have a lemon.

Well here we go again… My MM Defender is shipping back to the repair contractor again 24 hours after I got it back from them, same box too. This time he replaced the PCB, but it appears now, a couple other parts are bad.
I have to wonder all these warranty repairs (3 within the past 2 months) this must be costing Woodstream Corp more money than what I originally paid for the machine – $185.00. It would cheaper and more practical for them to just ship me a new unit.
I once had similar problem with a Dell laptop. After having shipped back 4 times at their expense for the same problem, Dell eventually gave me a new computer.

    Kate,
The Commercial Pro is by far the best model Mosquito Magnet that has ever been in production. They unfortunately discontinued their production some years ago. We still offer service and repair for them, but unfortunately they are not being manufactured any longer.
The best model for you would depend on size of the area you are trying to protect. These are the current models.

    Steven P:
Good news and bad news. Yes we absolutely can repair your Commercial Pro (also called Pro-C). We specialize in upgrades as well as repairs for that model. That model is the “work horse” of the Mosquito Magnet line. It is the commercial grade machine, and is built like a tank.
Now the bad news. We no longer offer repair services for the Freedom model. We could not reliably continue to repair them and hence could offer no repair warranty. We don’t fix anything without putting our full warranty behind our work. We can offer you a trade in. Please call us for more details. 1.800.214.7721.

My Mosquito Magnet worked flawlessy for a season, completely clearing my yard from mosquitoes. We could stay all the day out without repellent and not be stung at all. But then it started failing.
If it lost power it wouldn’t power up again until purged with CO2. After a few times, it never powered up again, due to a burnt catalytic converter.
The manufacturer should resolve those problems, because the system has lots of potential. But as it is, it is useless until they solve the reliability problems. THere are better, canned CO2 traps out there that are not as efficient but that are much more reliable.

  • Karl - Mosquito Control Technology

    Coz:
    Yes and No.
    Butane:
An alternate gas that can be used for the Mosquito Magnet®, but is not recommended. Butane can cause the Mosquito Magnet® to run hotter. In warmer climates this may cause the Mosquito Magnet® to run too hot and repel mosquitoes. We would recommend you stick to propane.

Whew, we have been busy. Sorry for the delay, I haven’t had time to keep updated on the forums.
Anyhow, most machines that are purchased on E-Bay are being sold for a reason. They simply don’t work. If you are going to buy a machine off E-Bay (and there are some really good deals to be had) factor in some repair cost to your overall purchase price. If it is still a good deal then go for it. Good deals are out there.
There are lots of these “fix it yourself” web pages on the internet. There’s one very important thing to consider when attempting these types of repairs. Your are dealing with a combustible gas source and it can be dangerous. Please, if you are going to attempt this, use common sense and follow your local safety codes to prevent injury to yourself and others. Public service announcement over.
Don’t worry about there being no repair men. We have a whole staff of them and we’re not going anywhere.
    Any more questions? Just ask.

Ced we haven’t had any luck yet but we are still working on it. My husband is determined. Just about to buy propane tank and continue the search. Have you had any luck? Perhaps we can work together. There must be a connection because there is an agent in France.

    Hello Coz,
thanks for your answer. That’s a good idea to put our ressources together.
I think for the mosquito magnets sold in France, they change the regulator with a close french one.
I’m currently working on 2 solutions. Both will allow the use of the original regulator that I don’t want to discard(because of the given pressure 27,4mb).
I’ve found, searching the net, these adapters below that fit the QCC-1 connection of the mosquito magnet.
    – One converts it to a more “standard” 1/4″ thread.
    – The other one converts the QCC-1 to a german bottle connection and adds a manometer.
Here are the links for both:
    http://www.propaneproducts.com/catalog/all-mr.-heater-parts-fittings-hoses/mr.-heater-tank-thread-adapter-76.html
    http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120559801720&ssPageName=ADME:X:eRTM:DE:1123
For the connection to the french bottles, There are fittings you can easily find(easier than the QCC1…) in a plumber shop (for the 1/4″) or in a RV accessories shop(camping-car) for the german to french bottle adapter.
It’s a bit harder for me in French Polynesia to find these because we don’t have the same variety of choices than in France.
Anyway, the items are on their way, I’ll keep you informed of which one works better on the regulator.
If you find “web shopping links” of the fittings that meet the connection of these adapters to french bottles, please let me know.

Well, my Liberty Plus has stumped me. I am getting the dreaded out-of-propane indication and the machine will not start. It had run a complete tank already this season, then I put on a refilled tank and the problems began. On the new tank, it would start OK but stop with an out-of-propane indication overnight. Start it again, and the same thing. Thinking it was a problem with that tank (air bubbles, bad OPD valve, overfilled, etc.) I swapped for yet another tank. Eureka, it started and ran for a full tank.
But now, on its third tank of the season, it refuses to start at all and gives the out-of-propane indication after several false starts.
So far I have (1) proven that propane is delivered to the Out port of the regulator; (2) proven that the solenoid opens at the correct time and propane is delivered to the nozzle; (3) took apart the nozzle and cleaned it (even though it was spotless inside and only a bit of oily residue on the outside face); (4) disassembled the plastic air intake manifold to make sure it wasn’t clogged; (5) verified that the spark-igniter was sparking (you can hear it clearly); (5) shop-vac-ed the exhaust port of the burner and verified that there is clear air flow through the burner area.
I don’t think it is a thermocouple sensor problem because I am pretty sure the burner does not ignite. (On a normal startup I can hear the “pop” as the propane ignites, and then the spark igniter stops sparking in a few seconds.) Doesn’t happen now. No pop.
That about covers everything I have read in this and other Mosquito Magnet blogs.
What have I missed? Sounds like a propane flow problem – but where??

I found the problem. Turns out to be a design flaw in the high voltage wiring that drives the spark igniter.
I got suspicious because (as I said in the earlier post) I could hear the igniter clicking. I assumed that meant the igniter was working. Then I realized I could hear the spark too well, and I was hearing it from one of the side mesh vents — not from the combustion tube.
I dismantled the Mosquito Magnet (for the 5th time!#%^#%?!) and found that the high voltage wire feeding the igniter ran through a piece of shrink tubing to insulate it from surrounding metal components. But the last thing it fed through was the foil insulation around the combustion chamber. Since the shrink tubing didn’t cover the last 1/16 inch of wire, the high voltage was arcing to the aluminum foil instead of driving the igniter.
Who would run a high voltage wire past grounded aluminum foil without designing some really beefy insulation?? It’s as if you wrapped your car’s spark plugs in aluminum foil and then wondered why the engine wouldn’t run.
Here is what the innards of a Liberty Plus looks like. The igniter wire is the thick black wire coming out of the center of the foil-covered combustion chamber.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/cstrathmeyer/4664440672/sizes/l/
Here’s a closeup of the wire where it connects to the igniter. Note the charred aluminum foil and the burned insulation on the wire from the arcing.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/cstrathmeyer/4664430150/sizes/l/
The fix was simple. I trimmed back the foil enough to eliminate the arcing. Now it looks like this:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/cstrathmeyer/4664428282/sizes/l/
Still a hack, but no arcing! And the Mosquito Magnet started up fine first time.

I have a ProC machine serial 0478. The machine will not start. There is some gas flow, as there is the tell tale pop or “howl”, but not enough propane flow to sustain a burn it seems. Does this machine need a periodic blast of CO2 to clear out deposits? I have verified that there is propane flow to the safety gas valve and to the base of the burn box (cylinder 1 1/2″ diameter, 2 1/4″ long). But I suspect there is not enough gas flow through the burn box. By the way, is this where the catalytic beads are located?

I have a liberty that has worked flawlessly for the last 4 years.
Now it won’t start and is saying gas flow error.
I took it apart and didn’t find any build up in the chamber at all, and cleaned the nozzle. All air passages look good, and the drain hole looks fine.
I pulled out the thermo while it was running and can see catalytic converter getting red.
It will start, get hot (appox 200 degrees) and then shutdown with the error. So, it seems like everything is working.
I am going to test the thermocouple tonight to see if it is reading good.
Any other suggestions on what I can look for?

You have one of them that has a switch. Look for it and make sure it’s tripping. Otherwise, I’m sure someone could open it up and disconnect/bypass the switch.

Are you still availble to help with reapairs. I just bought two Mosquito Magnet Defenders, and seem to have an immediate problem getting them running.
What are some of the simple maintenance things I should be doing.

I found a Magnet Pro-C at a Home Depot. It is clearanced at $575 from a posted price of $1195. When were thewe discontinued? The Mosquito Magnet web site does not even mention them.
Is this work horse worth buying?

    Hi Coz,
I just got one of these adapter on ebay I talked to you about and it works like a charm with french propane bottles and the QCC1 connection of the mosquito magnet. As a bonus, you get to have the gauge to check on the remaining gas.
The lady is nice but speaks german(hopefully english too!!) and the shipping fee is okay.
    Here is the link again:

Hope this helps you and other french people out there…

I won’t get into the complete history of my MM Liberty, but I will just say that I’ve had the “No Gas” error code for years. I’ve done pretty much everything mentioned on this site (thank you to everyone for the input) with inconsistent results. This year, I finally broke it down and cleaned the nozzle that goes into the combustion chamber with the thought that if this does not work, it’s going in the trash.
Well, like a lot of the other fixes it worked for a day and a night, but the next morning, I got the code again. Usually, when the fixes don’t work, I just do the easiest thing which is to just start it up again by pushing the reset button. This worked for another day, so I did it again the next morning. This pattern continued for days. I had no desire nor time for another big disassemble, so I just hit the reset each morning thinking 20 hours/day is better than nothing.
A funny thing happened after about a week or so of doing this. It stayed on and it has been running without an error code for about almost a week. So, with all things being equal, what changed? My conclusion is the outdoor temperature and humidity. I know that idea has been tossed around on this site with mixed reviews, but that’s what I’m thinking is the difference with my machine.
I’ve always had a hunch that the cool damp conditions have affected it. With the machine in the shade and the really wet seasons we’ve been having the last number of years in eastern MA, it often stayed damp around it even on hot days. We are in the midst of a hot dry spell that I think is helping the combustion and gas flow in some way.
Thunder storms are possible this weekend, so I’ll see what happens. I might move the unit to a spot where it gets more sun to help it heat up and dry out afterwards. Either way, I’ll post the results. The only thing that makes all this hassle worth while is that when it runs, it catches mosquitoes like crazy.

Wow! What a great blog. I have 3 MM. I am very diligent in servicing, and over the past 3 years I have only been able to keep one working regularly. I am tempted to take that one apart to determine what makes it work where the other two will not, however I am too chicken to do so. The fact that so many of us work so hard to keep these things working is a testament to how well they work WHEN THEY ARE WORKING! ACE True Value, Home Depot, Lowes, or even Sears should consider making a better designed version of this product. They could corner the market that is currently Wide Open.

BigWill- Anyone familiar with gas or electric furnace can troubleshoot these units (controls and parts are similar to a modern gas furnace, except small scale), Unless you are comfortable with gas controls, don’t expect to make sense of all those wires. Parts are hard to find too. MM does not sell to public

had no gas issue. took unit apart. could not find fix for loose bag, since no sensor was avail. did discover nylon screw that held thermocouple was not there. replaced it with regular metal screw. now system is working w/o no gas issue.

Tried rebuilding liberty twice. Still get gas error. funny thing is that I can manually light the burner tip and I get a nice 2.5″ flame with a good fanout. Igniter is new and working. Just seems like the gas and the igniter are not meeting up. I’ve run out of ideas. Do you have any? Thanks.

In response to Chris’ problem with a Liberty igniter: Check the high voltage wire that feeds the igniter. Then have a look at my earlier post about my Liberty Plus. In my case, the igniter high voltage wire was shorting against the foil insulation around the combustion chamber. I was hearing a snap-snap sound when the machine was trying to ignite, but it wasn’t the spark at the igniter tip, it was an arc between the HV wire and the foil. The machine was trying to ignite but there was no spark at the igniter tip because of the short. In that old post, I posted photos of my problem and the fix.

during the “ignition” part of the cycle, I’ve isolated the burner tip and am able to ignite it manually. In another test, I lifted out the igniter and it was glowing. So, I seem to have gas coming out of the tip and a way to ignite it, but the two do not seem to meet up. It’s now a few steps away from the trash.

Well, the unit finished off a full tank and I have it on the second tank without the “no gas” issue. We have had a few thunderstorms roll through, but the generally hot and dry conditions have continued in eastern MA. So, the weather hypothesis is still being tested. I’m sure the nozzle cleaning helped, but I don’t know why it didn’t work for days right after the cleaning.

Same problem as Mike and John. I might be clued out on this, but “out of the box” my unit had the quick clear C02 cartridges but no adaptor to screw on to the back of the unit. Am I missing something?

Chris, I found this link: http://www.mosquito-trap-depot.com/mosquito_magnet_manuals.html that has PDF manuals for most of the models of the Mosquito Magnet. Your posting is quite old so I suspect you may already have heard of this. Just ignore this message if you already have the manual.

Include me in the frustrated MM owners club.
I’ve had a Defender for 4 years that has worked well, the only problem encountered has been dirty contacts where the power supply plugs in and that was easily remedied. A neighbor gave me her Defender and I can’t get it to light and run. After multiple failed attempts, I scoured the web and found this site, gra/midco and the MM forum.
I listened to the starting sequence and all seemed to be in order except that the light flashed soon after going solid. I’m fairly certain it flashes after the igniter goes out and everything cools down some.
So the next step was disassembly and testing. This is what I have observed.
    1. The combustion chamber looks like it has never seen a flame-no soot or deposits at all.
    2. The unit has never been opened by an unauthorized person-I broke the warranty warning tag when I opened the head.
3.The gas valve clicks at the proper time.
    4. The igniter glows red hot at the correct time.
    5. The regulator and hose will flow gas when hooked up away from the unit.
    6. The thermistor seems to be operating correctly. I tested with an ohmmeter and got the correct cool reading and it dropped quickly when heated. I took my lighter away from it before it went to 25K(didn’t know how much heat it would take). Also, the unit shows a brief solid light at ~+4:00 that I think is the thermistor being satisfied by the igniter.
7.I took apart the nozzle and soaked it for 24 hrs in thinner even though it was pristine in appearance.
    8. When started without the top on it, the only heat in the combustion chamber is at the igniter.
    9. There are no obstructions or deposits in the air intake chamber.
    10. The hand written date on the combustion chamber is 6-23-03.
Here is a report of the 2nd phase of testing(repeated 3 times with 2 tanks at different levels–unit fully assembled)
1.I placed a magnet on top of the solenoid to ensure it was open.
2.Powered up the unit and turned the tank valve on slowly when the fan slowed at +3:00
    3. Unit lights, heats up(94 degrees at side exhaust, 85 above igniter on plastic cover), water drips from snout
    4. Indicator light shows steady at +8:30
    5. Exhaust temp begins to drop at ~+25:00
    6. Indicator light starts rapid flashing soon afterwards ~+26:00
    7. Gas still flows after fault(confirmed by odor–remember that valve is held open by magnet)
    8. Fan runs until unit cools down
My next step will be to try the regulator from the unit that is working when its tank runs out. If that doesn’t work, then I would conclude that the nozzle is defective. Does this sound reasonable?
