Should Carriers Charge Less for Pipes to Get More For Services?

Andy Abramson has some lucid thoughts on carrier pricing and has a suggestion to mobile operators relating to lowering the prices of broadband as a means to sell enhanced services. Certainly this happens with SMS today but I wonder if carriers will be able to charge for services which others like Google will gladly give away for free.

A good point made in the piece is with Microsoft as a parent, Skype will have lobbying cred on par with the best in telecom. It is unclear if this is totally the case as AT&T’s connections in Washington are incredible by all accounts – but still, this is certainly a step up the ladder for Skype in terms of DC clout.
