As organizations accelerate their use of AI—particularly in customer engagement, cybersecurity automation, and enterprise workflows—CISOs are finding themselves at the center of a new risk frontier. CISOs should define internal AI usage policies that classify use cases by data sensitivity, criticality, and regulatory exposure. Align acceptable use with existing risk appetite statements and security classifications.

3. Develop AI Governance Controls

AI systems, especially those used in enterprise workflows, must be monitored and governed like any other critical system. CISOs should establish:

  • Audit trails for model inputs and outputs
  • Role-based access to model endpoints
  • Usage logging and performance thresholds
  • Controls for prompt injection, model manipulation, and API abuse

If the organization is building models internally, ensure secure development lifecycle practices are extended to model training and fine-tuning pipelines.

  • Data masking and redaction when needed
  • Prohibited data types are excluded from inference and feedback loops
