Backblaze Launches Enterprise Web Console and Zero-Trust Features for Scalable Cloud Storage Management

Backblaze's upcoming Enterprise Web Console showcasing SCIM configuration.

Backblaze has announced the private preview of its new enterprise web console, offering organizations a streamlined, secure way to manage B2 Cloud Storage at scale. The launch includes enterprise-ready features like role-based access controls (RBAC), mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA), and integrations with single sign-on (SSO) and SCIM—all designed to align with zero-trust principles.

As enterprises continue to scale digital infrastructure and adopt multi-cloud strategies, storage solutions must now do more than store data. They must secure it, govern access intelligently, and do so in a way that reduces complexity, not adds to it. This launch represents Backblaze’s clearest move yet into enterprise territory—traditionally dominated by providers like Amazon S3, Wasabi, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage.

A Smarter Console for Modern Cloud Management

Backblaze’s new enterprise web console centralizes storage administration, offering IT teams and managed service providers (MSPs) a single interface to manage deployments across regions and departments. Each team can manage its own B2 Buckets within the organization, while admins retain high-level visibility and control.

David Ngo, Chief Product Officer at Backblaze, framed it this way:
“Enterprises need a secure and streamlined central management dashboard. Our new web console delivers that—along with access to enterprise features like multi-region bucket creation, RBAC, and B2 Overdrive—while preserving the simplicity Backblaze is known for.”

While many competing platforms offer robust feature sets, they’re often locked behind complex billing models or multi-tiered APIs that increase implementation and administrative overhead. Backblaze, by contrast, positions its platform as a more accessible, lower-friction alternative, particularly for organizations that want powerful storage features without the complexity of legacy hyperscale vendors.

Building on Zero-Trust Best Practices

Among the key security updates are role-based access controls, allowing administrators to assign fine-grained permissions to users based on job roles or department. This structure minimizes the risk of unauthorized access while making it easier to delegate storage responsibilities without compromising oversight.

Mandatory MFA further strengthens identity security, while SSO and SCIM integrations allow teams to synchronize user permissions with their existing identity providers like Azure AD or Okta. These capabilities position Backblaze to meet the expectations of enterprise IT and compliance teams—particularly those migrating workloads from hyperscale vendors or deploying cloud-native applications in sensitive environments.

By comparison, many traditional vendors offer similar capabilities but often require add-on services, higher-cost enterprise plans, or third-party tooling to achieve equivalent levels of identity and access control.

Multi-Region Storage for Performance and Compliance

The new console also enables multi-region bucket creation, allowing customers to store data across different geographies for improved latency, redundancy, or regulatory compliance. This brings Backblaze closer to parity with leaders like Amazon S3 and Azure, which have long supported global replication and storage policies for cross-border deployments.

Backblaze’s advantage lies in simplicity and price predictability—especially important for startups, mid-sized organizations, or departments with flat IT budgets. Whether for disaster recovery, edge computing, or latency-sensitive applications, multi-region support helps organizations serve global users more efficiently without overcomplicating their architecture.

Designed for Scalability and Ease of Use

The redesigned console maintains Backblaze’s reputation for usability. Its intuitive design enables both central IT teams and departmental leads to manage storage with minimal training. This is particularly attractive to MSPs, who often juggle dozens of client environments and need quick access to resource controls, usage data, and access logs.

Unlike platforms that assume a highly technical user base and require advanced scripting or deep infrastructure expertise, Backblaze is doubling down on operational clarity—making it easier for teams to enforce policies, audit usage, and control costs across their deployments.

Where It Fits in the Competitive Landscape

Backblaze has traditionally competed on price, simplicity, and S3 compatibility, carving out a niche among developers, media teams, and cost-conscious IT buyers. With this launch, it edges further into the territory of full-featured platforms like:

  • Amazon S3, the gold standard for object storage but often seen as costly and complex for small teams
  • Wasabi, a high-performance alternative known for predictable pricing and egress-free data access
  • Google Cloud Storage, which offers tight integration with Google’s ecosystem but may be less attractive to neutral cloud adopters
  • Azure Blob Storage, which integrates deeply with Microsoft environments but can be cost-prohibitive at scale

Backblaze isn’t necessarily trying to out-feature these incumbents, but rather provide a clearer, faster path to operational readiness. The new console reflects this goal—equipping organizations with enterprise-grade control and observability without locking them into complicated contracts or opaque pricing.

General Availability Later This Year

The enterprise web console is now in private preview, with general availability expected later this year. Backblaze customers with committed contracts can contact their Customer Success Manager to request early access.

For organizations seeking to modernize their storage infrastructure without overinvesting in complexity, this release may prove to be a compelling option.
