The one area Verizon Wireless might want to look into is Akron, OH where the EVDO speed rivals snail mail. The good news about my stay is that the University of Akron WiFi Access is ubiquitous throughout their campus. I spoke their today. The one challenge is how tight the WiFi security is. I was talking to many of the tech people who were explaining the horrors of protecting a network from students who seem to click on any link. As a result, I couldn’t send e-mail, connect to remote desktop or do just about anything. I could only surf the web. When I had to send I connected to EVDO and just waited and waited and waited. This is a good example of how hackers have made life difficult for people who need technology to stay productive.

July 9, 2007 at 12:07 pmHi Rich,
I live in Akron, Ohio and have been using Sprint’s EVDO since Jan ’06 and it works great.
I’ve raved about it a few times in alt.cellular.sprintpcs.
Sorry to hear you had so much trouble with Verizon.

July 9, 2007 at 8:13 pmThanks for the comment. I suppose Akron is a big place and any time someone makes a declarative statement like the one I made above it can be proven wrong. I hope for the sake of the people in Ohio that my experience was not indicative of EVDO as a whole in the region.
Thanks for the counterpoint.
