Using Phones in-Flight

Lately there has been much coverage of airline broadband connections. Soon we will all be able to talk on our cell phones while in flight. Well really I made that last part up… But I do think there are many times when I would like to be able to pick up the phone and communicate with other people.

Ina  few weeks I will in fact be flying to ITEXPO and it looks like at least for one leg of the trip on will be on JetBlue… I am super-excited to try the new in-flight broadband connection. I really can’t wait. I will be sure to let you know how it goes and I will certainly blog live from the flight.

I have to thank Russell Shaw who not only will be at the show but moreover wrote a voluminous entry on his ZDnet blog regarding cellphone use on airplanes. What is amazing to me is the few airline crashers and incidents which have been potentially linked to cellphone use.

The blog mentions the fact that about half of cellphones are on in-flight today and they obviously don’t cause many problems. I would say the number is closer to one quarter but either way it equates to millions and millions of on phones.

So in summary, I think I am warming to the trend of working while connected and talking while in flight. I will get my first taste of this in a few weeks and if any of you are traveling to the show on an Internet equipped flight, I would love to hear about it.
