This makes it ideal for battery-powered IoT devices such as utility meters, sensors, and environmental monitors that may operate in remote or infrastructure-limited areas. Depending on terrain and environmental factors, LoRaWAN can achieve transmission ranges of up to 15 kilometers in rural settings and 2–5 kilometers in dense urban environments. Its low data rate helps optimize energy efficiency and extend battery life—often measured in years rather than months. However, a key trade-off is limited throughput: LoRaWAN is best suited for small, infrequent data payloads rather than high-bandwidth applications. This constraint is typically acceptable for use cases focused on telemetry, alerts, or periodic status updates.
