Cybersecurity in the Wake of MOVEit Attack: Strategies for a Safer Tomorrow

In recent times, the cyberattack on MOVEit file transfer service left over a thousand organizations vulnerable, showcasing the intricacies and challenges that businesses face in securing their digital assets. Emsisoft and KonBriefing Research indicate that the number of organizations affected by this wide-scale attack rose nearly 40% last week. This ever-expanding pool of victims highlights the difficulties organizations face in determining potential exposure and underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

Notably, the Clop attack spree, discovered on Memorial Day weekend, continues to multiply its victims as more downstream victims are identified through public disclosures and the threat actor’s website. The situation is made even more complex as, for nearly two-thirds of the victims, breaches occurred due to their third-party vendors using MOVEit or because the vendors’ vendors used the file transfer service. This interconnected web of businesses, including accounting firms, consultancies, and benefits and pension actuaries, exposes a vast array of organizations that would otherwise remain unimpacted by Clop’s attacks.

For instance, Milliman, a Seattle-based actuary and consulting firm, recently filed multiple breach disclosures, revealing that its clients’ data was compromised because it shared data with Pension Benefit Information, a MOVEit customer directly impacted by the attacks. This broad sharing of personal and sensitive data highlights how easily victims can become ensnared in the web of cyberattacks against MOVEit customers.

With more than 4 in 5 identified victims based in the U.S., including 173 colleges and universities, the necessity for comprehensive cybersecurity strategies has never been more apparent.
