Scientists Discover Microbe That Rapidly Captures and Sequesters Carbon

Fossil fuels literally, fuel progress, manufacturing, technological innovation and more. The argument over what percent, resulting carbon emissions may contribute to climate change, might never be solved but it is a certainty that more people from the third world will join the first world, resulting in skyrocketing emissions. Even if, you drive a Tesla, carbon emissions will increase. Not to mention the fact that in Asia, a coal plant a week or so is built.

This is why sequestration tech makes a lot of sense. The good news is, scientists have discovered a microbe that can capture carbon dioxide quickly, and it sinks, essentially sequestering concentrated carbon dioxide.

Nicknamed Chonkus, the microbe is a type of cyanobacteria, which feeds on carbon dioxide through photosynthesis like plants. Researchers revealed that only these can consume much more CO₂ than their multi-celled counterparts.

Researchers from Colorado State University found that these microbes, or microscopic organisms, have adapted to harsh conditions and have developed specialized traits—some of which could be beneficial to people by gobbling up carbon dioxide or cleaning harmful pollutants from the environment.

This discovery adds to a growing body of research exploring how microbes can be harnessed to combat climate change. For instance, scientists have identified other cyanobacteria strains that absorb CO₂ at unprecedented rates, converting it into useful resources like fuels or biodegradable plastics.

Moreover, some microbes have been found to turn CO₂ gas into solid rock through a process called carbon mineralization, offering a stable and long-term method of carbon sequestration.

These findings underscore the potential of microbial solutions in addressing environmental challenges. By leveraging the natural abilities of these microorganisms, we may develop more sustainable and efficient methods to reduce atmospheric CO₂ levels and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
